It's still pretty mediocre cordage for most uses other than rigging a parachute. I can see using it if you get it cheap or free but I can't fathom why people obsess over "mil spec" paracord when braided polyester exists.

Indeed the average accessory cord is much better, though yes, it is slightly more expensive, and it's not as widely available as paracord, but still it's not like you need a thousand feet of it on a daily basis. You only need a small bundle for your /out/ings, and it'll last much longer than paracord, so in the end, it's definitely worth it.

But we'll get lightsabers before those people understand paracord is shite.

So true. Paracord is only widely used because it's cheap to produce and thus used as a general purpose cord, and was prominently used in paratrooper survival techniques, the main reason of this being that they're "paratroopers", and as such, they usually have something called a "parachute", which contains quite a lot of "paracord".

I saved this picture from a while back, an attempt to have people use something else than paracord. Paracord is so behind compared with modern cords, I'm amazed it's still being produced for civilian use, and hasn't been replaced by better cords that wouldn't even be more expensive to produce.

Amsteel blue is a favorite among hammock users.

That's all I know, I don't use hammocks myself, but I've seen Amsteel being mentioned quite often.

Depends on where you live. I mean *anyone* can get the chinese crap for around $6 100', but thats not 'true' paracord(No way would it hold 550lbs. Still useful for crafting non-essential stuff though) but the legit stuff is pretty pricy up here in Canada as well. Military surplus places typically sell it for around $12 100'... which is comparativly pretty expensive, but still not too much when you look at alternatives.

Amsteel is great stuff if you're making rigging, or hammock slings, or whatever. You can do tons of cool splicing with it. It was made for replacing wire rope, and it's also great for that.

For bear bags or building a lean-to or whatever the hell people horde paracord for? That's just silly. Amsteel doesn't hold knots well and even the 7/64 stuff is 6 times more expensive than paracord. The 3/16 line is ~$.70 a foot.

Y'all need to chill the fuck out though, I'm not pretending that it's the greatest cordage on the planet. It's cheap and good though. I just needed a fuckload of rope for cheap. I'm just using it for anchor line for a 3lb anchor.
Yeah, it's a bit thinner than I would like for anchor line, but I'll make it work.

It's called 550 cord for a reason. It can hold 550 pounds of weight due to it's construction, which is pretty impressive considering how compact it is.

Also you never know when you might need mountain climbing rope that'll fit in a jacket pocket.

Besides the other stupid stuff you said, paracord doesn't hold 550 lbs. It has a tensile strength of (at least) 550 lbs. That's a safe load of 110 lbs, or 55 lbs overhead.

If you're unfamiliar with cords and ropes, yes. Otherwise, you'd know that cheap accessory cord that's as big and heavy as paracord can hold more than that. Pic related at equal size holds 718 pounds, thoroughly tested by a dozen European institutes.

I wouldn't even rappel with a rope that's weaker than 5000 pounds.

you can also waste a shitload of bankline and not feel bad as per the price with paracord.
paracords main advantage is its internal strings which can be used for various things. so its better for raw survival but most people should switch to bankline for above reasons.

The bowline and related knots retain about 90% of the strength of the rope. Clove hitches are similar. The Figure 8 family is, I believe, somewhat less efficient. A simple overhand in the middle of the rope doing nothing can rob a ton of strength from the rope.

50% is the rule for a reason, though. Nobody should ever have to deal with a rope breaking.

I have always done this storing it in 100-200 yd segments, it takes some time but I do it while watching tv or movies. I also have a woven beltof about 250 ft of cord that I wear every day.
