Unfortunately where I live the water is so fucked and over fished over the years that we have next to nothing compared to where I grew up ( I am in Kansas). Best we have is a stocked trout lake. You don't have to do anything special to catch anything there.

I've found one of the most versatile knots for fishing is a Palomar knot. Super easy to tie, gets more secure the harder you (or a fish) pulls on the line.

You can yell as much as you want, but fish can get spooked by movement and bright colours, at least if you fish somewhere the water is calm and clear.

I'm not a scientist, but they probably can hear a bit from above water - especially if somebody holding a pole with a line in the water is talking.

Next time you're fishing a rat-l-trap, hold your pole up by your ear and listen for a second while you're reeling it in - you can hear it rattling clearly, because the tense line is transmitting those vibrations (sound) from under water through your line. So I'd assume if sound can transfer through the line from beneath the surface way out on a full cast, it can also transfer the other way around from the pole/line to beneath the surface.

The vibrations caused by people running, stomping and thumping around on the shore/rocks/pier/boat will definitely spook some fish. Voices not so much, but probably at times.

Superstition for the most part. Fish have an organ in their flanks that lets them sense vibrations (hearing so to speak) and this is extremely sensitive.

But you can talk all you want in my opinion. It would be better to watch your step, step lightly, see not to cause small "rockslides" when approaching the water and so on. This can really scare them away.

from what i've heard, fish can sense vibrations along the shoreline. vocal isn't as important as making sure you aren't stomping around. this is especially true if you are wading. that doesn't mean you should be yelling. generally, quieter is better.

I snagged a muskrat last week...

I casted out a crank bait and one of those little bastards started swimming out from some reeds midway between me and my lure. I didn't want to hook him trying to reel in, so I let the line go slack figuring he'd swim over it.

He swam over it but the line caught on to his feet or something, and I watched as the lure slowly made it's way closer and closer to the muskrat as he swam by. Eventually the lure met the muskrat, so I pulled out my sawed off and blasted him.

Just kidding. I flipped the spool on my reel and let him take it so the hook didn't dig in. He swam to shore and the line & lure luckily tangled on some vegetation and the muskrat went home unharmed.

I thought I was going to have to fight a muskrat to unhook him - I was dreading that.

It's actually pretty damned interesting and worth the read. TLDR - They do have "ears" as well as their "lateral line" which can detect sound/vibrations. Pic related for lateral line. Hair cells either on the surface or sub-dermal run along the line and transmit vibrations to the fish's nervous system. Helps them to swim in schools, orient themselves toward prey, etc.

Also noteworthy. I imagine it isn't too much of an issue but if you're line were taught and you had your rod/reel against your chest as you spoke it could probably carry sound into the water. Much like making a "phone" out of a couple of cans and some string.

Whether or not you're gonna scare the fish away is up in the air. Some fish are skittish about noises and some are drawn in by sound (think lures like poppers, jitterbugs, etc). I usually play it safe and try to stay quiet, not in terms of talking but in regard to my point(s) of contact with the water. When wading or fishing from rocks I walk softly. When on the jon boat I throw a blanket down in the middle so dropped gear doesn't resonate through the hull.

This seems like a good knot, very similar to the knot my dad taught me as a kid, only not doubling back on the first step. He called it a Rapala knot, and 7 twists for good luck on the second step, and spit for lube on the 3rd step. Fishing is the second most superstitious cult of men after gambling I know.

I recently smashed my rod in the car door breaking it off about halfway down. Reel is still fine so I will just be picking up a new rod.

My question is whether I should be looking for a graphite rod or a fiberglass rod.

Universal rod.

Will be watching a bobber and cranking for panfish to pike.

My old rod was a medium 6ft fiberglass that I used for everything just fine. I hear good things about graphite though so I was considering one.

Main catch is that I'm not looking to spend more than 50 dollars...

just get a good spinning reel, they're far simpler and if spooled right don't birds nest half as often as people make out.

Also, they're rugged as fuck. Dropped mine into a clay brine slurry and it still worked fine, just cleaned it when I got home.

The "conditions it suits" is casting bait, preferably the kind you keep casting over and over again.

They aren't made for float fishing; if you want to watch a bobber get a spinning. Cranking and trolling is where they shine.

They make excellent bait for walleye and northern pike, if that's your type of fishing. Fish them live or make steaks out of them. Walleye seem to love chunked suckers.

My friend and I have been fishing at Belle Isle in Detroit with very little luck. Caught a small muskie on an overcast and windy day, but that's it in like six outings. What gives? I really have no idea what lures or bait to use. I just have a small collection of hand-me-downs from my dad and a couple newer rapalas i got last summer. In other words, how do you guys know what to fish with? A broad question I know, but i could really use some help here. Feels like I'm totally guessing every time i switch lures
