>Bear encounters

I encountered my first bear this weekend.

>Hiking the Manistee River Trail
>water everywhere on west side of river
>Assume I have enough and cook tons of oats on the east side
>Cant find water anywhere on east side.
>getting desperate, spot some stagnate pond water 200 feet down a slope.
>leave the trail, making my way from fallen tree to fallen tree, trying not to slip.
>almost reach water, and stop at last fallen tree
>hear a rustling in the leaves
> spot a small fuzzy black animal, that hides from me instead of running
>It's a cute as fuck baby bear
>Look around, don't see or hear mother
> 2spooky
> decide I need the water anyways
>run away from baby bear towards the far edge of the pond
> dunk Gatorade bottles as fast as I can, don't even bother silt filtering
> climb up hill yelling as I go

So I thought encountering a baby bear was a death sentence, but I never even spotted the mother. Am I lucky or is this normal?
