Hey /out/

I don't find the 9 hour working day (or in my case the 11 hour working day) very agreeable, and I'm interested in the idea of self-sufficiency and living for very cheaply in a rural area of Britian.

Are there any books/links/resources that will assist my research into this sort of lifestyle?

I am 22 years old and this has nothing to do with Into The Wild.

I feel you bro, but to live sustainably in the wild is much easier with some starting capital.

for example, do you own any land? tools, lumber, roofing, wood stove, etc...

so much stuff is required for such a venture, and even more knowledge if you plan to grow food, hunt, or keep livestock.

Myself I plan on working and saving up enough money to buy 10 acres in vermont, put a shack on it, and start living by keeping chickens, growing vegetables, solar panels on roof, wood stove inside.

The major issue I'll have is the winter, since Scotland is freezing in the winter and experiences heavy snow, so I may have to live in a town over the winter, working in a pub or something

The main problem that you'll face is the loneliness. I lived on my own for 2 weeks in snowdonia a year ago and I nearly went batshit for the loneliness, got pretty sad. You'll save money sure, but you need to weigh up the trade offs of this. If you're ok with your own company then you'll probably be alright. Good luck!

When I was in Snowdonia I lost a fair bit of weight due to poor knowledge of my surroundings. Plan ahead, can't stress that more. You should fully scout out the area you want to survive in before you get out there. Note down any water sources, time taken to walk to nearest towns/villages etc. If you want to survive off the land then you'll need to do a LOT of research on what's available (and legal) to catch and kill in your chosen site.

There was a guy who lived in mid-wales in some abandoned cottage for five years, but I can't remember his name, but it was recent

Some years ago they were trying to lure young people to live on the islands in the hebrides to stop the population from dwindling, but it seems they've stopped.

Not a precise map ref no.. Like I said, I planned poorly. But it was at the base of Cardedd Llewelyn, I pitched up by the small lake at it's base. I hoped to survive on fish. I never caught a single one, but that's not to say there are no fish there, I might just be a shit fisherman! Snared 2 small rabbits and a grey squirrell in the woods to the mountain's south. That's all I ate. An abandoned dwelling is probably a good shout though. No drafty nights and a solid base camp. I don't regret doing it though, you learn so much from it, I figured out a way to make snares while I was out there. And you can surprise yourself with how much you already know.

Isn't that place pretty touristy though?

Also a lot of those lakes are for water supplies so that may be why there weren't any fish, but I might be totally wrong on both accounts.

What's to stop someone from going to one of those abandoned castles that have been left to rot and clearing the place out to make it habitable?

I'm sure if the government or landowners get pissy you'll get public support for making it a tidy area and an attractive location, as long as you don't let the smoke damage the walls or anythin

My thinking was that if I chose a hiker hotspot if anything went badly wrong it wouldn't be long for help to come. And yeah lots of them act as reservoirs. Some have arctic charr in though (learnt that from my degree in Bangor) I was hoping to fish for them but no joy. Where were you thinking of going to?

Clocking off now, but yeah I'd recommend doing it, even if it's only for a little while. If you're going for remote then make sure you've at least mapped out the closest populated place/motorway or whatever. And number one tip is: bring 2 kilos of rice and fucking bottle of jamesons

Pic is related. Look into dense farming and animal husbandry. No cows, as they're large and annoying and have shitty food-meat conversion ratios. Try chickens, maybe pigs.
I'm gonna be dumping some stuff. Try looking up "Self-Reliance" or "Sustainability" on Piratebay. There was one huge torrent that I got the other day; literally hundreds of books on the subjects of farming, growing, construction, medicine, really helpful.
