>>315840>So, is it actually possible to do this?probably not
source: I have an aunt that used to live somewhat in the sticks near Anchorage.
some facts:
1. bums try to homestead in Alaska back country all the time
2. most of the "remote" land is government-owned land, and you aren't allowed to homestead on it, or even be on it without a hunting permit
3. what land isn't govt, is private property. there are cabins around to use to warm up in while hunting. they are not there for bums to live in.
4 it is very difficult to find enough to eat in the "wilderness", so most bums resort to stealing from locals
5. the local residents do not appreciate poachers or thieves, and they will call the police and inform on you, and the police will come and remove you
6. most people who try to homestead AND who manage to stay hidden until winter hits,,,,, end up walking to a house and begging for help during the first cold streak, because they are starving and their hands are so frozen that they can't even open a pack of matches
7. when YOU do #6, they will let you in so you don't freeze to death--but they will also call the cops on you, and the cops will remove you.

If you want to pretend to be outdoorsy, the Dick Proenneke story is much more accurate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Proenneketwo big differences there:
1--he had the legal right to go where he did
2--he spent 2? 3? years preparing, just building a primitive cabin to live in.
