>>320232Why would you want something lighter?
Is saving a couple of ounces off your pack/belt really worth having an inferior tool?
The video
>>320236 posted actually illustrates my point.
He starts out by saying that the poll can be used as an improvised anvil. Hatchet can do the same but has more surface area to work with.
Next he describes it as a good chopper and chops off a piece of wood with about 20 swings that could've been achieved with 3 or 4 swings of a hatchet.
"Some people have trouble chopping with them..." (That'll be because it lacks the heft of a hatchet) So he removes the head and batons it through a piece of wood like a splitting wedge. A hatchet could've just, y'know, split it.
Then he uses the removed head as a "hand plane". *facepalm* That's why you' have a knife on your belt.
Next up is the old classic, Improvised handle. "You usually break them when you throw them." Why the fuck are you throwing your tools at trees? It's either a toy or it's meant to do a job. You can still improvise a new hatchet handle in an emergency in a similar way.
Video closes with the head tied to a stick SIDEWAYS to be used as an adz. fucking_seriously.jpg
So far, the only advantages I've heard of are that it's lighter than a hatchet (I'd say that's a drawback rather than an advantage) and improvising replacement handles is easier. I'd counter that one by telling them not to do dumb shit with their tools.
Tomahawks are fun to throw at targets but that's all they're good for in my opinion. A hatchet is much better suited to any actual job you'd use a tomahawk for.
Am I missing something obvious?
