So I'm starting to get some /out/ gear, and I'm thinking about getting a army surplus alice pack, rather than one of those juggernaut packs that run 300-500 bucks. What do you guys think?

I think this has been done to death. Alice packs are bulky, uncomfortable, and heavy as fuck. But cheep. If you're so poor you need to spend $50 on a pack, I'd recommend getting a used old school frame pack instead. I saw one in a thrift store for $8 the other day.

i have a medium size one and i can fit my 12 year old cousin in it.
they are great to have for something stupid like a bug out bag or if you need a shit ton of spacce but get something smaller and lighter

I have one. They're a bit heavy for their capacity, but you can trust them. Be sure you have the frame. If I need to loan a pack out, I loan out the alice. Nobody's complained about it making them sore, but that's because I make it fit before I let them leave the house with it.

Also TNF, Deuter, Mountainsmith, REI, etc make decent packs that are <$300.

I bought this for 50$

fits enough to survive plus some.

I put my first aid kit in the front pocket because it has a velcro backing and fits perfectly in there. I could easily attach it to the front, but why bother?

I think if you're really looking into older military packs get a Gen I or II ILBE. They're relatively cheap and can withstand the elements. But be careful because they are a bit heavy.

Learn what you would actually need to bring with you, and get a pack based on that.

If you want to go on actual hikes, get the biggest one you can find and google "hellcat mod" and do that to it.

If just getting for daytrips, then you probably don't need a pack with a frame. Head down to your local gunshow and find an Austrian or Swiss rucksack for cheap.

While we're on the topic of backpacks, i have this patern 82 rucksack, a canadian alice pretty much, and the hip belt is loose and wont stay snaped together. It doesn't look broken though whats wrong with it?

I had a cheapy MOLLE pack where the stitching was poor enough that after about a year the hip-belt fell off on one side. I would much prefer to put my trust in a backpack from a reputable brand.

Depends what you want to do /out/ exactly, but really, you only need to spend some $100-120 for a decent backpack. It's not going to be as durable as an ALICE pack or some other tactical ballistic assault pack, though it'll surely last you some 15 years at the very least, but at least it's going to be incredibly comfy and light, and that will make a huge difference.

Condor fuel hydration pack. Type that into google. Pretty neat pack. It's basically my EDC because it's a little smaller than a normal backpack. I have no buyers remorse. You'll definitely get some use from it.

The assault pack will do you at least 3 days, longer if you aren't squeamish about lashing shit to the outside of the pack, and using cheap MOLLE pouches on the webbing that exists across the exterior of it.

The main pack will be your 5+ day bag in most cases.

Both together will still be pretty cheap, (~$100, obv cheaper when just getting one piece) and they're absolutely bombproof.
