Kids with disabilities hang all over any adult who doesn't evidence the "tards are icky" vibe and whom they trust. They'll grab my hand walking across the school campus. I've learned it hurts their feelings unnecessarily to disentangle, so I don't. It's a comfort/reassurance/sensory stimulation thing for them.
The reason I make them hold hands is to physically reenforce (most of them are tactile learners and just writing something or telling them something does no good) that the other person is a human being as well. I actually only had to do it once, for about 30 seconds, at the first of the year. They quickly learned being mean to each other wasn't going to fly. I still make them sit next to someone they don't like, though.
