"trout" stream near my house has quite a few pike in it. was out tossing a tequilly hoping to maybe pick up a brown on a warm winter day and instead ended up with a pike. got lucky i landed him. only had 6lb flouro for a leader.

You ate him I hope, that fucker would be hell on trouts. I caught a big one on a spinner once in one of my favorite trout streams. We were canoeing and I was tossing a about a number 2 homemade spinner. Cast it up into an eddy and had a big swirl behind it. Yelled at my buddy to slow us down, second cast he took it. Like 30 inch fish on six pound test. Very lucky to get it landed with those teeth. He was tasty. I'm all about catch and release with trout, but one of these in a trout stream is bad news

i released him. the only native trout in my area are lake and brook trout and this stream is stocked with invasive rainbows and browns. i typically prefer to target the pike when i fish this stretch of the river anyways. there are plenty of tributaries nearby that hold trophy browns and very few pike.

Sound like where I live, we kill pike in trout streams though. Plenty of pike in the lakes around here. In fact my state (Michigan) is going to a slot limit on a lot of lakes to improve the size of the fish. Some lakes have no size or creel limit on pike here.

I don't fly fish that much. When I do it's usually for pike, perch etc.

What has worked best for me on pikes is an ugly home made fly with black squirrel, orange deer and some glitter.

take the trip, on the yellowstone there are 10,000 white fish per mile of river, at least that was the estimate 4 years ago when i was there.

I could take 12 whitefish out a day, they are all over the river.

Too early in the season. The streams that you can fish are snowed in and the fish are lazy/hard to catch. In a few months, they'll all be flooded to shit until like June.

look up a pattern for foam disk poppers. super easy awesome flies. you just get the thin colored foam sheets from a craft store (89 cents for a big sheet at michaels) cut 5-6 circles and super glue them all together. then with a sharp scissors taper it into a popper head. cut a notch that fits over the hook and super glue it on.(i use zap a gap) then from there make whatever insane wacky tail you can imagine.

try some standard bottom rigs. typically you will have your best luck trying this on rivers, next time you go out fishing pick up some #6 circle or octopus hooks, 1/4-3/4 oz weights depending on the current of the river and some night crawlers. just set the weight about 1 1/2 foot up the line and use half a crawler. fish on the bottom and feel for bites.

Perch, pike, salmon, trout, zander, mackerel, cod, eel, carp, herring, grayling, european whitefish, european plaice and halibut are probably the most common ones. Of course there's different types of salmon.

Berkley makes a rod called the black eagle. Discontinued now, but you can find them at Walmart sometimes for $20. I have 3, and fish them way more often than my expensive ass rods. Cortland 333 wf5f is another 20. And a pflueger medalist is another 25.
$65 bucks, and you have a good 5 wt outfit.
Next get some leader, tippet and flies. For bluegill I like a #12 pink lady and #6 9ft tapered leader. Catches gills allday errday.

Bought a 9/10 wt outfit just for this.

Semi related, anyone use s.a. mastery series gpx line? It's textured, and makes funny sounds when you shoot it through the guides.

It is this.
You can "drown" it by saturating it, and it'll fish well for gills still.
Other trusty flies for gills for me are small (12-14) wooly buggers in any color, and similar size san Juan worms tied with a little flash in them.

they grow huge put up a great fight and can be a very difficult target with a fly. also common carp have naturalized here in the states over the last 100 years and as long as they don't get into bodies of water they weren't already in they don't cause much harm.

I'm a self taught fly fisherman. Watch some stuff on youtube. God I wish that was available when I was learning. I watched videos (like vhs videos). Start out in the yard getting the techinque down, then next move to a non-moving body of water like a lake or pond. After you get to where you feel good about being able to place the fly where you want, move on to moving water. That will humble your shit. The two toughest things is getting the rhythm of the cast down (and staying between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock) and when fishing a river dealing with drag on your fly line. It's great fun though, and catching panfish on a small lake or pond is a great way to learn. And they are often very tasty too.

this is the hardest part

when you first start, you're going to try to use too much force. you need to learn to use the flexing motion of the rod do most of the work.

Europeans do a lot of carp fishing. In the States they are considered trash fish that only blacks and Asians eat. Which is too bad, really. They are a lot of fun. When I lived in Lansing, Michigan, I often fished them because they were big, and there were a lot of them around. There are folks that fly fish them in the Great Lakes now though, very much like Bone fishing in Florida/Gulf. They fish them from boats and sight them. They do a lot of this in Traverse Bay which is pretty close to where I live.

But I'd still rather trout fish...

Gotta agree with this guy, they've got a nasty attitude. We were spearing for pike one year and had a huge bowfin come into the hole and rip a perch off of my buddies line. Got the dogfish right behind the head too
