Longer hikes

I'm lucky to live in an area with a lot of great one night backpacking trips but try to go on at least one 1-2 week excursion a year. Let's discuss longer trips.

>What's the last trip you went on?
>What's your next trip?
>What's your dream hike?

I did the Wonderland Trail last year. This year I'm planning to explore the Pasayten Wilderness (pic related). I got the government mineral survey of the area and hope to find some cool old mines.

My dream hike is the Pacific Northwest Trail.

PNW trail would be my dream trip as well. I'm going to do a 30 mile (round trip) section of it from Bowman Lake to Lake Frances around the 4th of July.

Here's a view from GIant Mt. looking into the Dix Mountain Wilderness Area. There's less people here, and I can have fires and no need for a bear canister.

Next year, I would like to go to Canada, or somewhere nice in the US with a decently rugged terrain and do the same thing.

My gf suggested Norway at one point. I think maybe once I can go into the woods with a knife and fire steel, I'll tackle that. But the Adirondacks is the largest national park in the US, so that will have to do for now.

if you go for such long hikes, do you go alone or in a group? Also, would it be comfortable for you to solo? Personally, I'd love to hike, but none of my friends wants to, and I'm too scared to go alone. Is this a legit concern or does really everyone do solo trips from time to time?

I did solo, small groups (4 people) and large groups (10 or more people).
It is comfortable for me to solo.

PCT is on the bucket list for sure. My fiance and I are planning on moving to Alaska for a few years then moving back down to Washington. I think that either before the move up or after the move down we'll try a thru-hike of the whole thing. It would be amazing. Its just unfortunately hard to find 5-6 months off work.

Wonderland Trail is on the list for this summer if I have the time.

I used to do trans-Olympic Mountain hikes almost monthly during the summer/fall when I lived on the west side. 50-70 miles each. Looking to explore the east Cascades a little more this year. Maybe I'll go up to Stehekin. Never been there before.

I've never had a problem carrying 7-8 days of food and that's not trying to be weight conservative really. I usually carry instant oatmeal packets for breakfast, a large loaf of bread and a bunch of cured meat for lunches (I like salami), and prepacked dehydrated meals for dinners. I usually pack a fresh meal for the first night's dinner too. Bratwurst, beer, and potatoes are my traditional first night meal.

The worst thing that can happen when you're asleep is an animal getting into your food or a tree falling on you. A friend wouldn't help you in either situation. It can be spooky in the woods alone at night so I bring earplugs to keep me from obsessing about any noises.

As for the other things they're always a possibility, so let someone know where you're going and when you should be back. They can alert authorities if you don't check in with them.

It depends on how much you can carry and how many miles you do each day. If I do short days I could probably carry enough food for 12 days if I really wanted to (I wouldn't). 15 miles or more a day and I end up carrying ~2 lbs. of food per day.

like in the morning you wash your face so you can see properly -> do you carry washing water or you camp near rivers?
do you shit in the woods and also dump the toilet paper?
how do you keep your hands clean?
what do you sleep on and how do you keep gear clean?

I just realized that I don't ever really wash my hands while /out/. I wipe them off and rinse if I have extra water/am near a stream. If anything in the woods kills me it will be the shit poisoning I give myself
