Dexter-Russell's are the standby for cheap restaurant knives. Decent enough but there are better options unless you plan on using it as a kitchen knife.

hey /out/ im in the market for a new axe. and ive been in love with the small forest axe by Gransfors Bruks but lately ive been thinking. its only 47cm long and according to Mors kochanski´s teachings an axe should be from yous armpit to the tip of your fingers and that should be 67cm for me. should i consider getting the scandinavian forest axe instead? since that is 64cm long?

i already have a Hultafors that is about 44cm so that fills my "hatchet" role

any thoughts? should i still get the small forest axe or get the longer. slightly heavier scandinavian forrest axe?

i mostly do basecamp type outings where i get to a spot and stay for multiple days. not long stretch hikes so weight is not as much of a concern
any input appreciated

Depends what you are planning to use it for. Use their small forrest axe too and that's enough for my use. Primarily I use it to cut firewood when I'm /out/ and I mostly get that from fallen pine trees.

Essentially in Aus most knives have a huge premium but I can get the DR knives for just over 20 bucks. As an example, an Ontario rat 1 averages 75 bucks.

Get the knife m8, it will work fine and if you lose it in the field its not a big deal

After switching over to kitchen/butcher knives for hunting I have a hard time paying much for any knife because the price increase for a good hunting knife just doesn't bring much better performance

I recently bought a wetterlings axe, and noticed some discoloration/ heat patterns on the sides. Any axe/ metallurgy buffs know if this is normal (from the heat treating process), or a defect caused during grinding?

If you're trying to go ultra small and light, remember that you can whittle out a wooden wedge and use that to split. you don't need to rely on your knife constantly. Takes a little practice to perfect it but it sounds like something you might consider.

For me it's just odd. "cut thicker round than I can split with my knife, find sutable peg. Carve peg. Beat peg into chunk of wood. Carve new peg, repeat".

I'd just cut thinner wood...and yes, batoning is a lot of effort for a small amount of wood, doubling your prep time for half again as much wood really doesn't make sense to me.

But it's useful for early stage fire prep. Once you have a fire going...you don't need it. But with marginal material, access to the dry inner surfaces of the wood can make a huge difference.

The heat treat on a good axe or a knife done the old fashioned way is a differential hardening. The whole thing is heated, then the cutting edge is quenched quicker than the rest of the metal so the cutting edge is harder and the metal behind it is softer. This leaves a tool that will take a good edge and still have soft enough metal behind it to take some shock without breaking.

I've seen it done where the edge is rocked back and forth in a shallow pan of water until the back of the knife cools a bit and then the whole knife is quenched. Seemed to work pretty well, the knife came out OK.

Here's a question... well statement followed by a question.

I hate half serrated knives. I figure that if you cut so much rope and stuff that you need a serrated knife, get one solely designed for that purpose. Otherwise a plain edge will do fine and a half serrated blade will only screw with your day, more than not.

I suppose that's kind of irrelevant to my question as I don't care about this knife itself, just the serrations, but anyway, this knife by Maxpedition claims "field maintainable" serrations. Does that mean you can sharpen it on a stone. It looks interesting anyway, maybe it would be something to look at making a full serrated knife with. Does anyone have any experience with an edge like this?

There are triangular stones available for those who want to use a kit with an angle guide to sharpen serrations. I just use the corner of my Arkansas stone. And remember to start on the back side of the serrations, that's where the burr you need to remove will be hiding.

My instinct says to go Benchmade but those appear to be solid choices. Maybe on the lavish end of the scale but if you do a lot of these activities you probably know what you're comfortable with better than we do.

You have a lot of choices and it depends on price range and personal preference.

Take a look at the Hultafors Agdor for relatively low-price stuff with a wooden handle. Fiskars for a similar price range but fibreglass. Gransfors Bruks are sort of the Rolls Royce for axes, so they're good but you'll pay. Wetterlings are another brand that most people here will say good things about. Hultafors also do a classic range which is somewhere between their Agdor and Gransfors Bruks in terms of pricing.

I just picked up a SOG field pup because it was cheap. Does anyone else have experiences with these things chipping like crazy? I'm worried the knife might not have been heat treated properly and I just wasted $25

yep. I made 4 hotdog skewers out of some birchwood sticks, the knife chipped twice and by the end of it the part of the blade I was using was noticeably dulled compared to the tip. Felt bad

My nigga, this is my preferred splitting method when I'm out with a hatchet.

To be honest, /out/, I'd never even heard of batoning until I came to this board, and it seems ridiculous unless your knife is some sort of monster blade. However, since I've never tried it, I can't really knock it properly, so for those of you who have, why/how do you do it?

You could do a lot worse mate.
Had one for a couple of days when there was a pass around on a forum I use.
Boker are a solid make and it's a good all round bushcrafter.
Thicker than it needs to be IMHO. Real beast of a knife. You can't grumble at that price for 440 spring steel either.
Not a fan of ferro rods attached to sheaths but if that's your thing then go for it. Compass seems kinda superfluous.
Not a fan of bushie knives with that much ricasso. (Blunt part near the handle) Why not sharpen it and have more cutting edge?

I'll be sticking with the Condor Bushlore.
Whatever you get, get it from Heinnie. Those guys are awesome.

It's carbon steel rather than spring steel so it's softer than the Boker and will need touching up a bit more regularly. That's all I can tell you mate, I'm not a metalurgy fag.
It's not a chore for me though since I like sharpening and keeping a shaving edge on my blades. Even after a full day innawoods it only usually takes a good stropping and it's back to slicing paper.
Carbon also develops a patina over time which adds to the character. Plus, you can raise a spark on flint with carbon steel which gives you another firelighting option.
Personal preference really; The Boker will stay shiny and be lower maintenance. The Condor has more personality and is slightly more versatile.

You don't want to be too close to any residences or roadways since they'll contain people who could wonder about the smoke.
Do that and make sure your actual camp isn't vivible from the footpaths and you might as well try it.

Use a hawk if you want something light weight to supplement a fine edged knife for all kinds of hard use, if you carry a big ass knife there isn't as much sense in a hawk, but if you are like me and carry a thin sharp knife that is meant to be used like a knife instead of an axe then the hawk will round out your set well

I made myself a belt ring years ago with visions of striding along the paths with my hatchet on my hip but I quickly realised I was never going to actually transport a hatchet anywhere that way.
Hatchet and knife stay in my bag for transportation and only go on my belt once I'm off the beaten paths.
It would only take one Daily Wail reader out walking their labrador to spot me and report "A man with an axe" and the police would be obliged to attend.
Simply not worth the hassle. Better to be discreet, not spook the casuals and stay off the radar.

It perfectly illustrates why NOT to wear an axe on your belt though. Mine stays either inside of my backpack or it's on the outside and wrapped in green cloth. If you were told it was an axe, you could easily see that it's an axe, but most people wouldn't be able to tell what it is just by looking at it/

i can dig roots and tubers with a spike hawk and the thin profile cuts deeper when chopping. hatchets are fucking pointless. having that big wedge shaped pole on a hatchet is pointless as, it doesn't have the swing to split large pieces of wood. it's not like its a great hammer either as you will crack the eye.

there's "hawks" that are just as heavy as hatchets, H&B forge camp axe is pretty close with a 6.5" edge, 1.5 lbs. head, and a 19" handle. I use mine to split cut wood all the time, average diameter 6" or 7". Anything bigger I have top chop around the edge for a while.

I've tried a lot of knives. Some quite expensive.
Mora companion and mora bushcraft are good knives. I like carbon steel but that's just me.
Nice for what I usually do: No problem skinning and gutting, cuts well and handle doesn't slip with blood. Good for peeling potatoes and other vegetables too.

And maybe compliment with this Tops Fieldcraft knife for doing stuff with wood. Pic related.

Or a Condor Bushlore but those need a bit of work to fix minor flaws before use.

Earliest models were stone heads on wood handles, but a heavy blade on a stick is a pretty much universal human invention. So's a stick with a point. The natives were using both stone tomahawks as weapons and stone axes as tools before the Europeans arrived. They also had bows and arrows and spears and digging sticks. Hell, there's an engineered and dug reservoir at Mesa Verde that predates white people in North America by a few centuries.

And while a large tomahawk does work a lot like a hatchet (similar weight and cutting edge, it should) it doesn't work like a tomahawk because a hawk head was quite small until reenactors and bushcrafters decided they should be big. A rock the size of your fist does not weigh a pound, nor should a tomahawk.

I have a large tomahawk that works just as well as my hatchet, my sole preference for it however is that the handle can be replaced easily in the field for continued use until proper replacement. just shave a stick then done.

Why is being being able to improvise a new handle an issue at all? You can bodge a new handle onto a hatchet if you have to. I've never broken a hatchet handle in my life though. That's a ridiculous reason to choose one over a hatchet.

If you're claiming that your hawk splits wood just as well as a hatchet then I just don't believe you. A wedge shaped head is better suited to the task.

Frankly, you're not going to get a quality high carbon full tang 5"ish inch knife for $50.

The top one would be difficult to do, as the guy I'm buying from won't cut down the buffalo roll (The black spacers) to the 1mm as shown here. The cream coloured bits on the ends of the first two are water buffalo and are pretty much required if the black buffalo roll isn't thick enough and I don't want to have antler on the ends because you'll be able to see the marrow otherwise.

Which do you guys prefer in terms of appearance? I understand the picture isn't a perfect representation. Think the Helle Odel's handle.

I bought mine in the middle of the 1980s at the Reese AFB commissary when my uncle came to visit one summer. Still use it and have beat hell out of it many times. It drives most of my tent stakes and has batoned a time or two when I've been without a proper splitting tool. I had to reshape the tip after I loaned it to somebody and it came back missing a piece. I don't know if he was using it as a screwdriver or trying to stick it in the ground where there were rocks, but I was pissed either way. Sharpen it at a 25 degree angle then convex it just a bit and it'll take a good enough edge to cut tomatoes and hold it fucking forever.

Anybody afraid of a rat-tail tang is either a fool, someone who bought a cheap shitty one, or someone planning to thoroughly abuse a knife.

The middle one. The other two are too busy. If you're going to use antler-shaped antler bits, you're going to have a hell of a time getting the spacers to match. If they don't match, they won't be comfortable to hold and use. If you're rounding off both antler and spacer it won't be an issue.

Gransfors and such are very expensive. If you're just starting, you can't know which one you'd rather have. Start with something between $30 and $50 (US) and see what you do and don't like about it before you spend big bucks on a nice piece. Blowing a couple hundred bucks on a hatchet that's too light or heavy to suit you isn't a wise use of your money.

Personally, I prefer a 2.5lb boy's axe with a longer handle to a hatchet, but I don't mind carrying the weight.

Anything vaguely resembling what a knife was meant to do will not hurt any decent (meaning Camillus, Ka-Bar, Case, Ontario, or better) knife with a rat-tail tang. The only real weakness they have compared to a full-width tang is in their ability to take stress at a 90 degree angle to the cutting edge. Since I don't use my knife as a pry bar, it isn't an issue.

Here's my hand axe and hatchet, I haven't been able to get around to buying a whetstone, so they're not as sharp as they could be, but I've at least been able to use a file on them a bit.

The one buried in the wood is my favorite, I got it from a family friend who passed on, lovely ash handle, head was probably made by them too. It's see plenty of use, and is probably 40+ years old, and I hope to keep it in nice enough shape to get the same amount out of it they did.

I had to replace the wedge recently, it actually slipped out when I was preparing a log for a whittling project (the wooden bit resting on the log), I replaced it with a piece of cedar I picked up recently, holds up like a charm. The hatchet in general has a really nice weight to it too.

As for the Truper, it's an alright hand-axe for log splitting, but I haven't been able to properly sharpen it yet, so it's fairly dull. I picked it up for only like $15 though, so that's a steal, in my opinion. It's a bit on the heavy side compare to the hatchet, but considering the bigger and thick axe head, it makes sense. The handle is hickory.

I use a vile to sharpen my axes, I dont even bother with a whetstone anymore. They are chopping tools not cutting tools. A narrow edge will only curl faster and therefore not chop as well as a slightly less sharper edge.

I don't really use the hatchet for chopping as compared to the Truper, it's more for small cuts that I can't really manage with a knife as easily, I'd like to be able to have it hair-splittingly sharp, for that sort of thing.

the grit finish of an edge bevel and the thickness of the edge bevel are not the same thing. the two are completely different. whether you use a file or a stone has nothing to do with edge thickness.

lastly,
using a file is retarded for two reasons.
a:
the shearing force of a file damages the steel dramatically compared to the abrasive wear of a stone.

b:
a smooth and polished edge is more well supported than a jagged edge. it works better for chopping.

Hello, plastic deformation. You want as much contact area as possible when sharpening something made of steel. It's ductile and will deform around the circumference of that file during sharpening, leading to wonky edge profiles and reduced performance over time. A really fine mill file would work for a rough edge on an axe, but you really should use a 220 grit stone after the file. It'll cut enough better to be worth the time.

For all the morons "sharpening" their knives with files or steels:
The point of whetstones is that you're taking something less hard than the blade and very fine that will gently wear away the minimum amount of steel required and leave you with a precisely ground edge. It's not that the edge is any more brittle or fine. You can fucking sharpen at any angle on a whetstone.
The only thing you're achieving by using a file or steel is excess wear on your blade and a sub-par edge.

I make and restore knives and cutting edge tools that range in scale and sharpness from custom surgical micro scalpels with a precision of 3-4 microns at the edge up through 24 inch chisel tips for construction machinery.
