Can we just agree to this at least? If you have specific questions about survival, ASK THEM. If you just want to know how to "into survival", then read a book on the subject. No, really. The subject is interesting, but minimal effort on your part will save us having to spoon-feed you. I recommend the US Army Survival Manual. You can find it on Amazon for like $7

Is there any good source for the bare bones of how to into camping? I'm from a suburban family that used to plebcamp, then stopped because they got a boat, so I literally have no clue how to do any sort of geniuine, "survival" camping.

Besides even if it did work it is a problem in search of a solution. The number of survival threads isn't hurting anyone. It is too broad a subject to force into a single thread regardless.

If you have specific survival questions, ask them. We're not going to go through every single survival topic which you may or may not already be familiar with unless you say you want to know about that. A whole thread could be dedicated to finding water in various environments.

I support this. It would be neat if we could have intelligent survivalism threads, like an entire thread about wilderness first aid, an entire thread about primitive fire-starting techniques where people post their experiences trying (and failing) to rub two sticks together, etc. It could be fun. Having a million "help me survive when IT HAPPENS, btw i know nothing on the subject" threads isn't going to promote much intelligent conversation.

Even if they were a problem, since I can understand a few people getting annoyed with them, I do not believe it is a major enough problem to warrant any action. Sure they may be annoying but you can always just hide the thread or let them die. Some may have potential and people seem to enjoy them.

Even if they did warrant action it would be better to have janitors prune them. At least it would have an impact rather than cluttering the board with a sticky that for the most part gets ignored.

What do you guys do when there are high winds and you're in a tent. I usually like to use snow walls, but what about for non alpine situations

Pitch the tent in an area sheltered by the wind. If you find yourself inside the tent and a windstorm blows in, secure the tent with more stakes outside, rocks inside in the corners, and stay inside. Good winter tents will flex quite a bit before breaking. The tent fabric should break before it carries you off like some kind of a kite, and if you're in that kind of wind, you've probably got a lot more to worry about, like lightning.

I've never had that problem. I have some good titanium stakes and have camped through hurricanes. Also flown a kite in a hurricane. Didn't get any sleep but stayed dry and the tent was fine. Had a sturdy dome tent at the time and I kept my gear in it because everything else was soaked.

I've never camped in or near snow so I have no idea if that presents its own special challenges.
