Sup /out/, me and some friends are going survivaling this holiday in either the Ardens or the forrest of Fontainebleau for 2 weeks max, hunting for our own food with nothing but bows.
We want to bring as little as possible, without being in too much of a problem if shit hits the fan

What would you say are some absolute necessities for hunting/survivaling and do you have any tips?

we're mostly going for small game since we're not allowed to own spring rifles in our country so no fucking deers or anything.
Also a lot of fishing and we're bringing enough food to survive even if we can't find anything.

How do you find rabbits in the forrest though?

What you're talking about is camping. Congratulations. There are different levels of camping though. We have the typical weekender who pitches a tent out in the "wilderness" for a couple nights. We have the more hardcore guy that packs up anything he can ruck for a day and leaves for a week, probably with friends. Then we have "survivaling" which is damned near the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Basically you tell people to come find you in three days and carry a GPS phone on you so you can radio for help in case you seriously fuck yourself and they can find your body a week later.

Get into hardcore backpacking. It's actually a fun hobby that will teach a bunch of skills you will need to know to operate for extended amounts of time in the wild. Like land navigation, proper packing, and general fitness.

Seriously, everything else about survival can be fun. Every miserable rainy night in a ramshackle shelter by your failed campfire can be enjoyable, unless your stomach is empty. Two days with hardly any food and you won't think twice about walking back to your car and heading to the nearest McDonald's.

Walk the fuck out there and see if I can manage to survive for any amount of time. How long would I last? Would my resolve break and how quickly?

What would I learn about myself and my abilities? Could I do this every weekend until I get somewhere and moderately capable of fending for myself for a weekend?

Sleeping Bag
Sleeping Mat
Fire kit
Cordage (As needed for shelter system)
Pots of some sort... At the very least some metal skewers.

With the right knowledge knife will allow you to improvise several absolute essentials (firemaking, cordage). Water bottle is most important as a container to carry things/boil water in. Sleeping bag so you don't freeze to death, though you still need to make a brush shelter. Warm waterproof clothes so, again, you don't die of hypothermia. Flint and Steel so you can make a fire.

But this isn't how you start out. You start out by bringing a list like this >>325443, and while you're out there studying what's around you. Where fish hang out in the lake, where the edible berries are, how to make an effective shelter, how do I navigate my surroundings, etc, etc. There's so many small factors you won't even notice until you're out there.

Now I don't want to spend too much right away for my first time out camping, where can I find cheap good deals?
I live in The Netherlands by the way.

That's a good list, good call on the trash bags. No idea where you'd get that stuff in the Netherlands, sorry man. Here in the States for cheap gear it's usually between a department store and hunting/military surplus. If those are options for you, go for milsurp before cheap store items. It'll be somewhat bulky and not great quality in general, but should be cheap and the sleeping bags are usually very warm.

Hope this helps. Where is there even to go /out/ in the Netherlands?

Being Belgian I find myself obliged to say there's nothing in the Ardens to "survival" in. You literaly can't go anywhere that is more than a km away from a house or road. Northern France isn't different, because you're in Western Europe. There is no real /out/ here. If you want to do "survival" when in actual danger, go to Scandinavia or Eastern Europe.

Pic related, the average Belgian "forest".

>Things you shouldn't do in order of importance:
bring guns (the fuck? This isn't murrica.)
kill animals
light fires
carry axes or big knives
wild camping (You can do this if you set up after dark and leave before morning, but why would you bother?)

>What you should do:
Go to a registered campsite (There will be a one within 5km of anything where people hike. Per tent you pay between 3 to 10 euros.)
Get your water from the tap at the campsite.
Buy food at your local Carrefour or Spar (You can never get far away from one)
Buy a local hiking map and do day hikes starting from your campsite.
Have an awesome trip

>Where you should go:
The Ardens are awesome. You could go to the Spa region for example, which is near the Hoge Venen.
Compiègne has one of the biggest forests in northern France.
Fontainebleau sounds nice, but I've never been there so I couldn’t say.

>If you're going by train:
Trains in France are quite expensive. Avoid TGV if possible.
In Belgium you can get a train pass for 10 trips for 50 euros, could be less expensive depending on how many people are traveling and how far you need to go.

>If you're going by car: Parking is usualy free at your campsite

I went into the woods with two friends once. There was a trail that we walked till the middle of the woods, then we decided to enter the woods, walk a little and come back to the trail.

We got lost at 4 pm. It was winter and night fell at 6 pm. At that time darkness is almost total, the moonlight can barely illuminate your sight because of the dense crown of the trees.
Fucking spider web everywhere, noises and unsafe stepping.
We didn't bring any food because the plan was to come back early in the afternoon.
One of my friends almost panicked.

We wandered the woods until eventually we found a weirdly shaped tree that I had seen when we stepped into the woods so we knew we were close to the trail and used that place as a reference point eventually finding our way out

So.
It was fun until the night fell. Your biggest problem is food, appropriate clothing and not getting lost.

I have a nice memory about that day even though I got a little scared too at certain point, it's a nice story to remember and tell.

My advice is that just do it, but don't think you are rambo and be prudent.
Have fun.

You might find weird shit into the woods too, like animal bones, old pieces of metal, little tents made of branches and leafs, etc.

Second, you won't do anything in the forest of Fontainebleau, it's not any kind of a wild place.

Hey man do you have a license for bow hunting? I don't wanna be an ass but if you go out there and don't have proper technique you'll probably end up hurting animals, not killing them, also the law is pretty strict in France about bow hunting, you need to have special arrows, undergo a class, and all your arrows must be marked with your license number.
I just wanted to give you some advice cause if you get caught hunting or fishing illegally the fine's pretty bad, even though fishing should be easier to hide

also, I'd recommend scouting the area for game sign and other resources before hand, because if this is your first time you will want to get the lay of the land.

and make sure you have a means of purifying water, and can do so for as long as you intend to stay out. having the runs in the forest is not pleasent, and could kill you.

I'm afraid you're romanticizing it all a bit too much. The Ardens aren't the wilderness.
You will never be in any remote areas. A lot of it is private property or state property (which is guarded by boswachters)
You can't randomly kill animals (especially if you don't know how to hunt or clean them). Either you're shooting at rabbits (good chance you're going to miss) or boars (who will royally fuck up your trip).
Just set up your tent in your backyard, and cook some noodles in a fire the experience will be cheaper and just the same, if not better

This.

If you can't hit a softball, or ideally tennis or racquetball, from the max distance you plan to shoot from don't do it. Yeah, the general rule-of-thumb target area is a pie plate, but you want to have better marksmanship than that. Aim big, miss big. Aim small, miss small. Even then, there's a lot that can foul up your shot if you're not used to assessing your shooting lane quickly.

You get the idea. I know a guy who had it happen to him, they almost had to amputate his thumb, it fucked up his nerves, tendons and muscles. He either feels nothing in his thumb or some days he has excrutiating pain, either way he has no control over it and now has to wear a special glove that's reinforced in the thumb so he can grip the bow.

It's not just carbon arrows though, same can happen with aluminium and wood.
Carbon = Porcupine
Aluminium = Peephole
Wood = Depending on species it's a combination of both.

Always inspect all of your arrows before and after shooting... and after any misses, glancing blows, or impacts into rock or hardwood

"Durable" is debatable..
Aluminium being a metal means it gets fatigued, unlike cracks or splinter in a carbon arrow that you can audibly hear when flexing and twisting the arrow, metal fatigue is invisible and silent, you won't really know until you fire it.

I'd say investing in good quality arrows from a serious maker matters more than what they are made out of.
Personally I only go with Easton carbon arrows, I have around 100 arrows and only have had to discard 2 of them from missing and hitting rocks, after which from both an audible pop and crack could be heard when flexing and twisting.

aluminium arrows are toast the second they hit a hard surface/misses the target.
they will bend and achieve an erratic and unaccurate arrowflight.

i've had one of my carbon arrows strike a wall of armored concrete head on, and i still use it to this day (no damage whatsoever, i only had to replace the fieldpoint).

Other than bow and arrows, have adequate clothing, a knife (make it lage if ur going one tool), some means of making a fire, a kettle (or a billie can, whateverthefuck to boil water in, some cordage, snare wire. It will be more ecofriendly if u bring a tarp. And some back up staple food, Incase u don't find anything to shoot at. And don't use the word "survivaling", please. Minimal camping or some shit like that sounds a lot better
