Hey, /out/. I'm looking for a good camper, or some sort of outdoor living space on wheels. I was considering a VW Westfalia. I don't want something too big, and offroad capabilities is a plus, if it isn't much more expensive. any recommendations?

consider something else, like a chevy commercial van. its going to be from this century, reasonable mileage/MPG, and it will likely be well maintained in its life from being owned by a company. They are dirt cheap too, like a good one will cost 5k. from that you can retrofit it with sink/bed/solar/power source,etc from 800-2k depending on how cheap you are.

ohh and for an off road utility, get a good set of all terrains. so what that you're going to get like 6% worse mileage than an eco mpg tire. the all terrains are made to last 40-60k miles easily and not be torn up and more capable to resist punctures off roads and you're not going to get bogged down in mud/sand/water/snow like a regular all season would.

and for the most part, if you know how to drive in those conditions by modulating throttle, approach/departure angles and other crap you will easily be able to get by with a 2wd system in some 4wd areas so as long as you arent trying to rock crawl and have decent ground clearance. maybe 8-9 inches is good. you should be fine.

basically anybody who knows what they are doing in a 2wd rig will breeze right by an idiot in a built 4x4 jeep whos constantly stuck. I see it happen all the time.

Likely it'd be your primary source of getting around. So if you wanted to go backpacking or canoeing for a weekend you'd have to leave it parked somewhere.

Or if you're trying to stay in parking lots for a rest over. etc.

The van idea is always a good suggestion.

Doesn't even have to be a commercial van. There's videos of guys living in mini-vans. Less space, but even less inconspicuous and better gas mileage.

Once again though. I'd be leery of leaving it anywhere while you go /out/.

2005 dodge caravan. Take out the back seats and tint the windows. Get one with ac and less then 170,000kms. Parts are stupid cheap and they're easy to work on. bonus points if you find one with awd. You can fit a bed in the back and it looks hella inconspicuous. Another good option is a honda odyssey or a toyota previa. Tinted windows, awd, and ac is a must tho. bonus points if they have a power outlet somewhere in the vehicle.

Unless you bolt in a flat six out of a 911, it has essentially the same engine as a VW bug of the same year which does 0-60 in something like 26 seconds going downhill.. I can't even imagine how much worse it is with that flat front, the front windows open, and the inside fully loaded with bongs and whatnot.

The only upside to the type II's is how cheap and ubiquitous the parts are and being able to bolt in an air cooled porsche engine with almost no work.

I can attest to the general living ergonomics/well thought outness of Westfalia campers. Lived in one for an extended period and the only complaint I can think of is that the window shades it came with were too loosely woven and not completely opaque, but I could've fixed that.

trailer trashed really helped suggested a 2 inch budget lift and 30's or 31s
even offered me his that he bought and isnt using for half of what one new is so i may take a trip down there once i get the xj and pick it up for him buy him lunch or whatever
thinking of getting a rooftop tent for it also for my car camping trips but i cant seem to find a website with alot of options

The fold down bed (rear seat) in a passenger van is fucking huge.
Westys are cool, but expensive.

I've got about 2 grand into mine that replaced the one I hit a deer in doing 65mph.
That Van was a loss, but protected all three occupants who were not wearing seatbelts and suffered not so much as a scratch.
Vans are stout as fuck in the front and are the safest vans of their era.
Old buses, on the other hand; not so much.

I'd suggest a pop-up camper, either conventional or hard-side.

Cheeper then a camper-van, cheeper insurance and you can use your existing vehicle
to tow it and use your vehicle after the camper is set-up to go into town for supplies,
sight seeing, etc.
