Blighted? Dutch elm disease is a fungal disease spread by a beetle. A monoculture doesn't spread it, as much as it makes it a more noticeable problem. If you have a street lined with elms, it will be devastating to lose every single one, but if there was just one elm, it would get dutch elm, even today.

If you haven't seen an elm, go outside. They are fucking everywhere in the native range, most just die before they reach an older age.

However. Many elms have been treated with macroinfusion fungicides and there are many that are resistant to dutch elm, so you can find monsters in many areas if youre looking.

Hope you don't like ash trees too, OP.

Similar thing happened where I grew up.

Pic related made up about 80% of the trees on the island and the whole lot got killed off by DED in the 70s and early 80s and any weak stragglers that remained got knocked down by the storm in 1987.

The Elm was the perfect tree at the time - wind and salt resistant, excellent timber and a lovely fastigiate habit that was ideal for street planting.

OP, instead of complaining about it, you could do some research and realize there are many resistant cultivars available today.

I planted a Triumph for my dad last year and its doing great. He also has a resistant American elm on his property that is about 50 feet tall.

Probably because recorded history in America only goes back 400 years so there's no records like "King blah blah blah planted this oak in 1371."

Also a massive amount of potentially ancient trees were cut down during the 18th-19th centuries as forests were cleared.

FWIW, Dutch Elm Disease has not affected the Deep South that much because the climate isn't good for it. Unfortunately, Ulmus Americana attains its greatest size and growth potential in the Northeast and trees in Zones 8-9 tend to be much smaller and shorter-lived.
