i'm from diy and i use to pliers more then the rest so i really like my sog powerlock (top center of you picture)

around $47 and despite all the abuse I have given them i have never broke one more then a chip off the seriously sharp needle like pliers. I just filed it down a bit

Under $100 on a few websites, use it every other day for fishing/hiking to fishing area

But honestly if you aren't fishing or repairing a bike, I'm not sure what the point of a multi-tool is. Bring a knife and pliers and you'll be fine

I got a Sheffield multitool a couple months ago. It comes with a separate flashlight & belt pouch. Never leaves my side. I keep a winchester folding knife clipped on it too (acquired separately) - that kit serves every basic purpose I need it for while fishing or making repairs to gear on the go. Of course I keep long needle nose pliers & hemostats in my tackle box for those deep hooks/toothy jobs, but the sheffield is great for keeping on my belt.

It was only like $20. The screws down wiggle loose after tough use, and the flashlight (not attached to the multitool, but has it's own spot in the pouch) comes in handy every day. I couldn't justify spending $100 dollars for anything else.

+1 I got mine here in Sweden also for less that $100 (the one with the old titanium covers), it really is the flagship of multitools. Any multitools that I consider buying in the future will be measured against the Charge TTi.

I got a Surge for $35, no broken parts, missing case, missing file (it has an adapter for either saw or file and the saw was on it)

I also got a leatherman supertool for like $15 from a different shop, no case, file was broken, this one was in adequate to subpar shape, rattles like crazy, does everything it was meant to still except file things.

Victorinox swisstool at a gunshow for $30, about on par with my surge, came with case though, damn fine condition.

The point is, go look for one that somebody doesn't want anymore and you'll probably pay about a 1/3 of the price.

I also bought a bunch of cheapo ones like cobalt but I break my cheaper multitools pretty quick or deform their nonsharpenable tools. For what it's worth, main thing I was using my tools for other than when hiking or diy simple stuff was as my go to for some bio research during my graduate degree.

Broke my cobalt's file the way everybody breaks their file, using it to pry something. Stripped the philips head over 6 months of moving my machines around on their rack (screw in type rack) and when making the faraday cage for recording, rendered it's knife dull and banged up (can be repaired with a dremel, just havent got around to it) extracting implants from rat skull, the pliers are a little banged up mostly from related rat skull use and the wire cutter is mostly just able to strip now from cutting thick wiring with too much ambition.

Switching to my surge or my cheap leatherman, better quality everything even on the rattle(super)tool. Used those in the same capacity for another 6 months or so, also I use my supertool for anything relating to firearms or fishing, I'd rather have the surge when I go out for extended periods.

yup. if you want a 4.5" tool, the power lock is the best. The newer taiwan made ones are the best. Plier head is more refined than the american one(though not as beefy) and the gear covers make the 2endary tools usable.

for 4", its either the Rebar, Charge TTi, or swisstool spirit.

For smaller, its the Leatherman S2.

Worth mentioning the Supertool 300, which is prob. the heaviest duty tool(pliers arnt as good as the powerlock) and skeletool(which has shit tool selection, but looks really cool. Pliers are weak, screwdriver is horrible to use, and only the CX version's blade is worth anything... but again, aesthetically its prob. the best looking multitool out there)

This guy's advice is legit. It's ALWAYS worth looking for multi-tools and other quality equipment at pawn shops, antique shops, and the like. I picked up a leatherman pulse I used for YEARS for $10 at one. The knife was chipped up and the entire thing was packed with saw dust and bar oil, but the tools were in great shape...and due to the oil, there wasn't a spot of rust on it. It was in GREAT shape when it fell out of it's case some years after I bought it on a train or in the parking lot or wherever the fuck.

One bit of advice, on that note? Do NOT use the leatherman leather belt sheath. If your tool comes with the leather sheath, REPLACE it. Mine was in perfect shape, snapped shut, and the tool still fell out twice before I lost it forever.

This. I have small pliers and knife and a small file if I need it. Why would I bring a can opener etc that I won't need, with extra weight and the potential of losing all that if it slips out of it's sheath. I don't get multitools. The pliers are great - so I bring pliers. Meh?

The Leatherman freestyle is a multitool with JUST pliers and a knife. Seems like that would be a better option, unless you really need a pair of bullet-proof pliers(in which case you'd be taking heavy journeyman 2000 klein ones anyway)

what massive splinter have you pulled with pliers that you couldn't pull by hand?

also,

a sewing needle is about the best thing for digging out splinters and, they weigh much less than a gram. how much do your pliers weigh?

I could get a splinter out by killing a bear and snapping one of its ribs out and sharpen it into a point. But I feel quite comfortable having a variety of tools always situated on my belt that I don't have to rumage through my sack for or be afraid of losing. There is not arguing against carrying a multitool on your person, I was sceptic as hell before but after about a year now of carrying it daily you'd have no idea how many times I have saves someones day because I was carrying one.
