Actually, the first time (the 9 month bonanza) was right after college. This was right at the wort part of the economy crawling up its own asshole and I had just spent 6 months of failing to find a job while staying at my parents. Then my dad lost his job in a round of layoffs, found another within two weeks, and then lost THAT job after another two weeks when that company folded. I had some savings, decided I didn't want to burden everyone else, and took off. I knew some Spanish so I went to Mexico.
You know how weirdly hilarious it is to do yard work and small jobs for little old ladies in little Mexican towns in exchange for food and a place to set up your tent?
With new day-laborer confidence acquired, I wound up back on the north side of the border and did odd jobs for the next several months. Eventually one of the jobs I applied for online came through, and I had six weeks to relax before it started.
For recent stuff, I work a terrible, dangerous high-paying gig in the oil industry for six months, then have six months off. It's a living.
