While the idea IS based on actual water cleaning technology, it's based on biofilms on the sand and rocks that take a while to develop, and you should still test the results before trusting them.
If you just want to clean water a bit before boiling it, this is fine, but boiling, or using a chemical sterilizer, is far superior.
