even upper 60s HRC ZDP can be sharpened on conventional stones because, it only uses chromium carbides. spending extra for high quality diamond coated plates would be pointless.

high carbide fraction stainless that, uses vanadium for the carbides, would dictate the use of diamond.

pull through sharpeners are stupid no matter what though.

why would you want something that makes a wire edge? a wire edge is not stable and will break off. it's possible to have a fine apex and still be micro serrated do to the level of grit finish.

also,
leather conforms and roles around the apex of an edge. it's fine for helping to realign the damaged steel of an edge that has been displaced but, does nothing to sharpen and is only realigning already damaged steel. strops are fine for getting a straight razor back in to action in the middle of a shave but, hardly a solution for sharpening a knife.

nobody

leather is used in razors to realign damaged steel they don't have the time to sharpen off. somebody decided to make it a thing to load an abrasive (in this case toothpaste) into the leather with the misconception that it will refine the apex of an edge.

it's retarded and contradicted by physics but, the internet knife community is collectively retarded and so, they collectively decided that it works. it's the same gay shit as sandpaper and a mouse-pad.

The pull through sharpeners never work. Take a look at an edge made by one under a loupe and you'd be shocked. It looks like a jagged edge

My favorite are DMT diamond stones. They don't flatten and they cut even my ZDP-189 Spydercos like butter.

As of late I use my Ken Onion Work Sharp though. Used correctly they will always give just as good results as a very good freehand sharpening while being a hundred times faster.

I always finish my knives on leather strops loaded with chromium oxide and I can split a freehanging hair right down the middle with hardly any effort.

Go buy your own microscope and look at your edges after going through pull throughs, they're fine. Maybe they're not 'good enough' edges for you folks that only use your knife to cut tomatoes or shave your arm hair.

I'm not trying to be a dick but, quit making it so overly complicated. you sound like you might be using too much pressure. rub it back and forth at a mostly consistent angle then, lightly use a few swipes off the end of it off at a higher angle. you just set a bevel and then made the apex with a micro bevel. neither process should require much pressure and the whole not take more than a few minutes.

Are you getting rid of the burr? The way I do it is after I confirm the burr on both sides, I lightly sharpen each side alternately on a fine-grit stone.

I use a pullthrough for my stainless opinel, as it keeps it nice and sharp for what I need a pocket knife to do. It's probably not great for the blade and if one runs a finger along the edge you can feel it's kind of rough, but it does cut well and that's fine for me.

If we were talking about quality full-tang knives, a stone would be better, but they're also easier to sharpen than a small pocket knife due to the size.

I would assume he means by feeling. you'll feel a rough surface coming off the edge to one side of the edge and then the other. to be honest I hate suggesting raising a burr. it's going to happen anyway but most people use way too much pressure and raise a giant ass burr that is counter productive.

A finer abrasive is almost never the right answer, most beginners switch to a finer stone too quickly. Around 1000 grit is where to get you arm shaving sharpness.

that isn't really true. that depends on the steel. a steel with large carbides might degrade a fine edge quickly because the carbides are unsupported and fall out. the steel degrades to a lower level of sharpness and then stabilizes once the carbides are more supported. a steel without large carbides would hold a fine sharpness longer as, it doesn't suffer from tear out but, eventually fall behind in sharpness due to a lower carbide volume.

If by duller you mean the angle of the edge is higher (thicker) then yes duller blades tend to get last longer. If by duller you mean the edge is less refined (stopping on a lower grit) then it also yes because it will take more upkeep to a an edge sharpened to 8k to stay 8k grit to stay there than say a 200 to stay a 200.

Again I said I use it for work. Its great for gouges, chisels, planar blades (you need the black stone for that), and about everthing else I need around the shop. Also use it for my kitchen and innawoods knives, works great for establishing a bevel if you want to change the angle of your blade. There are cheaper models (grizzly for example) or just get a belt sander and free hand. It's overkill for as a kitchen sharpener of course.
