On top of being a shelter and a poncho, it can also be used as a protection from thorns and poisonous plants, something that served me quite often, or simply as a ground cloth on which several people can sit. Just think about waxing it so you improve its waterproofability.
I only ever used one, simply set up with pegs, a small branch as a pole, and a guy line, set up very low on the ground actually so I almost have to crawl under, and set up along with a homemade bathtub floor with integrated mosquito net.
It's fine for temperate weather, and cold/dry weathers like deserts, as long as you don't expect a pouring rain. I used it during some central European winters, and I was fine, wasn't the comfiest tent ever, but hey, I survived.
A great piece of gear overall if you want something durable and versatile. I have a plastic poncho tarp otherwise, basically the same thing but lighter and much larger, but for longer outtings where I can't afford a hole in my shelter/poncho, I stick to canvas.
