Any other places somewhat nearby to find neat stuff? iv always been more of a hands on nature animals kind of guy but this could be fun to get into ( pic related is what i do best)

Its near redding ct if you know where that is
Your local beach is bound to have quartz lying around you just need to look
Old mine park in trumbull ct has some mineral collecting sites but thwyre not very special or shiny if thats what youre looking for
Best places to collect would be north carolina alabama and illinois as far as i know and god willing ill be able to go to brazil to get some serious mining done one day

garnets arent anything special You can just go up on rt 4 between farmington and collinsville with a small hammer and a screwdriver and pull them out all day long some as big as quarters all around

What im getting at is CT isnt very special when it comes to collecting
Thats why the hobby is quite scarce around here but traveling is wirth it if youre really into it

You will be garunteed to find small stuff the size of your finger nail but theyre water clear and have no flaws
The bigger they are the harder they become to find and the more flaws they have and you usually have to work harder for the big ones
Its a great experience
Btw its $10 to mine for the day

I do my best to go every 3 weeks but being in college i can only go during the summer

18 just finishing highschool

Outdoor mine
More like a quarry
About 15 ft tall per shelf
Kinda like giant stairs
Id say about 100 square yards for the main pit

Whats the best kind to use, best methods to break bigger rocks, knowing what is the best kind to bother cracking?

I've found some really cool stuff just breaking open random rocks here in the glacial till area and want to get into it more, but lacking direction.
