Im looking for a machete and was checking this out. Anyone know if this Gerber Gator Machete is worth the money? Im just looking for something durable and not too big. I'm not that experienced with machetes, so I'd appreciate some input

No. The Gator Machetes aren't particularly good.
If you want to stick with Gerber, the Compact Parang is pretty good, but Condor provides a better one for a little more

Damn I knew it was like shit quarter tang or something retarded, just never took mine apart to find out.

Oh well, still used it on a few outings to chop up some fire wood to the point of it being unsharpenable without a grinder. Also used it to decapitate a fish while gutting it with my pocket knife.

What do you guys think of the like $6-10 bolo machetes that are fucking everywhere and usually come with a green cloth sheath? I have one but I haven't tried it out for anything but cleaning my bbq pit.

Considering real jungle bunnies are more likely to use the cheapo gear than the top-end stuff, on a day to day basis, I'd say the cheapo stuff is fine.

I know you already know about the like inch long tang, but yeah... I got one and taking it apart destroyed my confidence in it.

Shame really, as the saw back is surprisingly handy.

Regarding the cheapo stuff - it's probably fine but at that end of the price range I'd recommend carbon steel. We have a cheapo stainless tramontina one in work and there's only like half of the blade left - it's way too brittle and chips like a motherfucker. Others may vary I suppose, but as a rule cheap carbon is usually better than cheap stainless.

I feel kinda bad saying this, but Cold Steel makes pretty damn good machetes, especially for the price. Don't get anything with a two-handed grip and don't go huge and you'll be happy with it.

If you want a good machete that gets the sort of day-in-day-out use that third-world jungle-dwellers put 'em through, look up Tramontina or one of the Colombian machete companies.

You'll probably have to wade through Spanish-language websites for the Colombian stuff, but I've never had a South American machete break on me like the North American ones do. All he Gerbers I've used have flaked and notched like crazy.

I have the cold steel heavy machete and I love it.
I've actually cooked on it, it makes a perfect little griddle.(burn off the finish first or you'll eat paint)

I got a pack of 5 machetes from tramontina and they all work great except for the cane sugar machete. The do come a little dull though.

I bought a Cold Steel Kukri machete about four years ago and I've been thrashing stuff all that time with no issues.

I'd recommeend CS machetes. Nothing else but the machetes are decent.

I have the original and the mini. The mini was the best knife they ever made. It's fucking great. It's fuckhuge big brother is a pretty good piece of metal, but I like the size of the mini better.
