Hey there, /Out/

I was hoping I could get some help/advice on purchasing a pair of boots for my friend. He has a very specific criteria and I am finding it difficult to keyword so I hoped I could find some help here!

He wants;

-waterproof
-breathable
-quiet
-steel toed
-black
-suitable for work and hiking

I should mention his current pair of boots were about 300$ and I can't exactly meet that price range, but still wish to purchase something suitable up to about 200$. (I am a tad nervous of him judging based on expense)

Would any of you guys happen to have any recommendations? Thanks in advance, you're truly helping me out.

Never had a better pair of boots than the rainforest. Once you know the kind you want check amazon, I picked mine up for almost a nudred bucks less than the price on the danner site

Personally, as much as I would be honored if someone wanted to give me such a thoughtful (and expensive, although I know you're self-conscious about the "lower" price range) gift, there are a few things (okay, a lot of things) that I always prefer to pick for myself. Chief among them are packs and footwear, for precisely the same reason that I have very specific criteria, and proper fit and function is something idiosyncratic to me, my anatomy, and the various manufacturers.

In short, I get an idea of what boots (or climbing shoes, or harness, or pack) I want, but even then I need to go try them on at the end of a day on my feet and go with what works. I almost never end up buying the footwear I thought I wanted going in. An additional hiccup for me is that I wear a 12.5 US, and very few manufacturers deal in half-sizes after size 12.

Pick one, really. All my "waterproof/breathable" footwear makes my foot sweat and stink profusely. But I understand that you're looking for boots marketed as such.

I loved my Asolos, which fit beautifully (with medium-weight merino wool socks and liners), though I couldn't find any at my local outfitter with a safety toe. Wore those suckers out with a hard season of daily-use on Sierra granite.

Just picked up a pair of Danner "Vicious" 8" for this season of trail work: they feel pretty comfortable, and I liked the vibram hiker-style sole and composite, rather than steel, toe. But I have to withhold judgment because I haven't field-tested them yet.

My recommendation: I know it may feel a bit personal, but I would give my friend a card with a hand-made $200 voucher toward new boots. If someone gave me that, it would show me that they were even *more* aware of my individual criteria, and it would also give me the option to spend a little more if I wanted.

To assuage any further anxiety you have about impersonality, you could spend a day boot shopping (unless you're mailing the boots to your friend in, say, a combat zone or a backcountry camp) together. It's like when my Dad took me on my 6th birthday to pick out my first baseball glove.

I prefer composite toe over steel if safety-toe is a requirement, for the reasons outlined by >>334997

Composite is a little bit lighter, and warmer in the winter.

Look at something like Danner /quarry-usa-gtx.html if you're insistent upon order them yourself.

Another consideration worth looking for is "resoleable/recraftable". Dropped nearly $300 for my Asolos and found out I can't get them resoled. The uppers are still in fine shape, but the lug's almost completely gone.

yeah, nah. This is just stupid.

Why the fuck would you wear down a perfectly good hiking sole for work? Get one pair of goddamn steeltoed boots for work if you must and don't bother /out/ with this retarded bullshit. Working boots and /out/ footwear have practically nothing in common.

And if your faggot friend still insists on going /out/, he should first decide on what kind of terrain he is going to traverse.

Does he need ankle support? Or is he just walking along forest roads? Breathability? Is he crossing streams? Traversing boulder fields? Will he deal with glaciers? Ice climbing? Or just walking along forest roads?

Go visit some outdoor store, tell the clerk what kind of terrain your friend wants to visit and try out a couple of shoes. I can't imagine that there is any brand of shoes in any reputable outdoor store that isn't at least good enough. More importantly, your friend should try out a dozen or so shoes in the category he needs and choose whichever fits best to his shape of foot.
You can't go wrong with Meindl, Lowe, Salewa, and many others.
