I was unsure as to post this in /trv/ or /out/, but i figured its more of an /out/ topic.

Im considering taking up mountain biking as a hobby. Anyone here do it? How is it as a hobby/sport? Any bikes that would be reasonably priced for someone wanting to try it out?

Used Trek 4500 would be a good place to start looking. They pop up around $200-300 here.

Checked on craigslist for trek bikes, came up with the following

Trek 4300 Disc Mountain Bike - $400
TREK 7200 MULTITRACK - $300
Trek 3700 07' Flat Black Single Speed - $125
Alot of Trek 820-840's

Im about 6'2'' how should this come into play in looking for a bike?

At your height you will probably want something with an 18" frame (56-60cm in road bike)

What you want to do is straddle the bike with your feet on the ground, and the top tube in your crotch.

You shouldn't be able to lift the bike more than a couple inches off the ground without it crowding up your junk. If it sits way too low, it's too small if you cannot stand over it without ball tapping the frame, bike too large.

True dat. I found my current bike in a dumpster. Put about $40 in parts in it, was good as new. I've had it for about 3 years now, no problems yet.

You'll get the most help on /n/. Yes I do it, I've been on MTBs on and off my whole life (grew up in Fairfax, CA where it all started), race competitively, it's great. It's pretty expensive if you really ride hard but everyone starts somewhere.

If you are just getting started you probably want a cross country hardtail bike, especially if you don't want to spend a lot. Rear suspension is good for downhill and gnarly stuff but it's expensive for a good full suspension bike and you probably won't need it if you just want to ride for run/casually.
