hey /out/, you ever get that feeling like you're forgetting something? I have:

-trail clothes
-sleeping clothes
-rain gear
-insulation cuz fuck elevation
- 5' x 8' tarp
-cordage 'n stakes
-30˚ bag
-sleeping pad
-emergency blanket for ground cloth
-food
-water tabs
-stove and fuel
-cooking gear (I'm going solo, hell no I'm not bringing mess gear)
-the all mighty shovel and paper

what am I forgetting /out/? Doing 4 days / 3 nights in the Lost Creek Wilderness of Colorado, should be good weather. Also I know no tent, I wanted to try going out with just my tarp for a change (so furthermore if you're a tarp camper, favorite pitch?)

for chopping up large firewood its got a sawback and some bandages might shit go wrong for whatever reason

I wish I had a saw that I could take with me. I'm just making do with a sort of acceptable knife and big rocks. or just start a small fire and continuously feed it. kind of more entertaining that way.

I guess my real worry is that a space blanket isn't going to be enough for a ground cloth. I mean, I'm on my air pad too, but that pad's made out of fabric that gets wet. I guess my question is should I take my tent just in case, or revel in the super-light tarp set up?

I'm trying to get into some simple backpacking trips. Like overnight or 2. I need some help figuring out what I need. So far what I'm getting is in the picture. Also going to pick up a backpack, sleeping bag, and tent in person so I can try before I buy.

Space blankets make meh ground cloths, not because it's not up for the job water protection wise, but because they tend to make crinkly noise.

Pick up a 2mil plastic drop cloth, and cut out a chunk that's about a foot wider and longer than the mylar, and toss that on top. You get the heat reflection, and less noise.

As for the "I don't have a saw"...why the fuck not? First, a GOOD saw is $20. Second, a "useable" saw is $1 at any well stocked dollar store. Don't mind a little bit of bulk? A modern decent 21" buck saw is $10 at Home Depot.

Don't want the bulk? Get a pocket chainsaw. Not SUPER great, but they go through wood well enough and you can get em for $8-10. Not the wire saw, but one with links, either chainsaw teeth or the little triangles, I own and have used both types, and they both do the job.

Also, consider shelling out a couple bucks on less shitty gloves. Any solid cow hide will do.

Also, yeah, as that other guy said. Water. Don't depend on tabs.

HEET is over-priced online. And, frankly, It's over-priced, period. Plain old 70% rubbing alcohol is cheaper per BTU. You have to haul another ten percent or so of fuel, and it takes another minute to boil a cup of water...but you save a fair amount over time.

You also still need a decent fire steel. I recommend a quality mag-block. But a coughlans firesteel will do the trick, and if money's tight, DX.com has the same fucking products as the "big names" without the logos for about 20-30% cheaper. DON'T get your mag-block there, though.

Also, if you're only taking a non-full tang knife like that mora, you absolutely NEED a tool for processing wood. I recommend a machete or a hand saw. Cold steel makes useable machetes at the $20ish pricepoint, and you can pick up a decent $20ish folding saw online.

Also, you, and OP? Pick up a knife sharpener. A diamond rod will do the trick, the Smiths pocket pall, or a lansky blademedic are both good, cheep, compact options.

For machetes and other similar cheep much abused knives, I recommend a speedysharp, or one of the other tungsten carbide pocket sharpeners. Just DON'T take it to your decent knives.

Okay people on /out/ seem to love the idea of machetes, but they aren't very reliable/durable and dull easily. I have a feeling people just like to roleplay jungle explorer or some shit. Get yourself a nice hatchet/one handed axe, they have a little more weight to swing, and they're the tool that was designed for chopping wood.

A good Estwing hatchet will run you like 30.00, is made in America, and will last you a lifetime. I've heard of people who treat them like shit and even without don't sharpening it. it'll still cut like the first day for like 5 years

yes, I fucked up pretty good last year.

Decided it wasn't worth going without essential equipment. Stayed one night, went home and flew to Tenerife instead.
