I know op will be paranoid as fuck about sounds out when walking at night now but ive got a bit of experience with coyotes at night. dogs are easy to track and tend to travel the same areas constantly and at regular hours. if you are in that area at the same time again anytime soon id keep your ears open. also remember op that dog eyes shine in light so a quick blink with the flashlight and you can see them a ways off. also although dogs arr pretty silent, they aren't impossible to hear, particularly in a group. remember that they track by sent and sound, freezing still once they have spotted you wont do any good like with a deer. also get some fucking bear spray and just be super fucking aggressive when you see them dogs will learn to stay away. they are just opportunistic . also pay attention to the sounds of other animals like the frog when you are out they can clue you in to this kind of thing in advance
