/k/, what is the best cheap tent for poorfags? I want to go hiking along the Appalachian trail and in Zion National Park, but i want to go with a super light tent that doesn't break the bank. I was thinking of pic related - Austrian army shelter half from NE.

Any suggestions?

Its not so much that im thinking hipster, its just that I want a tent that takes up very little space and does what its suppose to.. This does just that.

I like to pack very little ( carrying a high sierra titan 55) and the more bulkyness, the less I find it desirable

unless it is monsoon season a tent in zion is not necessary, even then I have camped 5 nights in a row with a tarp in rain storms and have been fine.

Go with the shelter half. If you want to spend about $100, you can get a siltarp that rolls up to about the size of a pair of socks. Either way, a tarp will work out fine.

Honestly, I always rather tarps over tents. the floors of tents always seem to hold more moisture and dirt than they keep put, and they're a bitch to clean.

If you already have that shelter half, use it. If not, I guarantee you can find a decent tarp for a decent price at your local outdoor store.

Stuff a roll of paracord into the stuff sack with the tarp and you're set. Rolls up to be about the size of a large pair of socks.

For poorfags the Walmart brand Ozark Trail dome tent is hard to beat. Its a 7x7 dome tent that weighs less than 4 lbs. It does have some drawbacks (shitty fiberglass poles, no full rainfly, etc.) But its $30 US.

What does /out/ think about tents like the high peak minilite?

I know it's not really waterproof, but what can you expect for 20 bucks. You get a lot of condensation inside, but I really like that it only weighs 2 pounds.

Planning to go hiking in Slovenia with a few buddies for a week or so in september.

The options I have:
Tent + air mattress
Tarp + air mattress
Tarp + hammock

I'd like to travel as light as possible.

Hammock 650g
Air mattress 440g
Tent 1000g
Tarp at least 700g? Would have to buy one

The hammock limits us to areas with trees. Also, I'd hate being stuck under my tarp on the ground if we do happen to get bad weather/downpours for a few days.
Is the tent my best option then? In that case I would bring my tiny net hammock that weighs next to nothing.

OP Here, I went ahead and did more research. Ended up buying a North Face Stormbreak 1 for $100. Its way more than I wanted to pay, but in comparison to all the other one man tents/bivys this one was the best and at a pretty great price tag. I am probably going to just get a cheap tarp or bivy cover for the hell of it too. Pic related

It's made of canvas so you have to treat it with impregnation emulsion.
But look out there are different sizes out there. Just take the one with two or three holes on the ends.
Mine from '75 is the one with two holes, I'm 175cm and without backpack it would be too big. It weights dry 1200g but wet it's a lot heavier maybe 3-4kg

What do you guys think of the kohte. I just learned about them today.
Lots of configurations are possible with them. One kohte tarp works as a pretty good one person shelter. Take four of them and you get a pretty cool bigger tent that allows for fire building inside.
Add a shitload of them togeter plus some square tarps and you can even build something that resembles a mongolian yurt.

Maybe not the best for backpacking. But they seem awesome as a basecamp type of thing.

How many adults would you say fit in a kohte built from 4 tarps?
What are the advantages and disadvanteges, in your opinion?

There a two different sizes. The normal sized Kohte and the bigger sized "Wanderkohte". You can fit about 5 adults in a normal Kohte and 7 adults in a Wanderkohte, including backpacks.

Advantages: They a super sturdy and versatile. If you dont find a good place to build a Kohte you can still use a single tarp to build smaller shelters. Also you dont need to pack extra stuff like poles or pegs to set it up.

The big disadvantage is, that the tarps are heavy, a normal tarp is about 2 KG, the bigger ones are about 2.5 KG. They get heavier if wet and take long to dry.
