How many of you have a CB in your vehicle or use a portable? I recently put one in my truck (picture semi-related. How I installed mine) and had some good conditions the past 3 days for talkin skip.

Running a Cobra 18 wx st ii with a 3 foot firefly on the roof of my Frontier.

I've been looking and that Cobra 18 seems to be the only one that mounts in an ISO-DIN pocket. It's either that or the Uniden BCD536HP scanner.

How was the install? Did you have to take the housing off to expose the chassis? Is the built-in speaker loud enough? Have you had any heat buildup issues?

The install wasn't bad. The worst part is that I installed it in my Frontier with the CB below my cd player and got it all together and put the console back in to realize the antenna cable hits a piece in the truck, so i had to take it apart and put it above the cd player.

the speakers pretty loud and clear. when theres a lot of background, its almost impossible to hear, but when I get a clear signal it sounds awesome.

In hindsight, I wish I would've just got a smaller CB and mounted it in the truck somewhere. I dont like the fact that every time I tune it, I have to take a big part of my truck apart to get the meter connected.

Goal 1: pass a $15 multiple choice quiz. I used hamstudy.org to get my extra class license upgrade. External antennas are helpful, but not necessarily needed, a lot of amateur VHF/UHF relies on hitting a repeater which can usually be done with a cheap Chinese handheld.

Yes, the radio needs an antenna. But being a fraction of the wavelength of CB/11m, the antennas are significantly smaller.

I've got 50W in my truck. Legally allowed up to 1500.
I can hit local repeaters with my little 5W handheld, and if I hit a linked repeater system I can cover the better part of the state.
With things like satellites and IRLP, you can pretty much put a signal wherever on earth you want.

Front panel's between mirror and overhead console, mic's by the cupholder (i've since installed the mic holder just above the ashtray cubby), guts live in the space under the back seat. External speaker mounted behind the kick-plate by the gearshift.

HA/HV licenses are good for 10 years. One of my other ones is only good for 7.

I remember a thread a while back that brought me to looking at some handhelds that were pretty reasonably priced for beginning.

I've always been fascinated by radio but never really knew how to get into it. As far as cb goes, this is what my experience has been.

>today. conditions must be poor because I hardly got anything on my radio, even on skip channels.

The internet has obsoleted a bunch of the utility of Amateur Radio for distant communication, but it still is fun to talk to folks. The HF privileges you get with a General Class license lets you really reach out internationally.

Really don't even worry about them finding you. Just don't broadcast too often or with any regularity and you'll be fine. If they do find you they'll just send you a letter that essentially reads like this "Pls stahp. We will fine you, promise. And we will take your equipment(only if you're a licensed operator though...)"

Depending on where you live there are "free bands" that are used by "pirates" and/or liberty minded individuals at the behest of the FCC. Hop on one of those and qx to your heart's content.

I would put it at 65% and as long as you're operating without visible equipment it's damned near impossible for the FCC to prove it's you. If the FCC sends you a letter just act like you have no idea what they're talking about. Actual pirate radio stations can stay on for years without the FCC even batting an eye. It's only when another station needs the waves/some douche nozzle that knows about radio rats that they're shut down.

Let me put it to you this way. I wanted to get my license, rule in the house is that any equipment we buy, everyone needs to know how to use and be able to use legally. Radios, Rifles, doesn't matter. It can be set up for them, but everyone needs to know how to rock it or reconfigure so they can.

My wife studied for less than a month just using qrz dot com... and fucking did better than I did on the technician test.

It is not hard, it's not expensive, and unlike being a "free bander" or whatever you want to call it... people will talk to you, help you learn more so you can talk further/better/do more things with it.

You can go with ham radio wherever the hell you want to.... from just personal in-family communications to talking to random people around the world to making regular HF shots to family that's also hams across the US. You can play with computers and get email anywhere w/ ham radio among other neat technological tricks if you want, as well.

It's worth it just for the ability to actually play with/practice with the stuff without fear of federal repurcussions.

When you key up without an identifier, everyone's going to shift freqs, stop talking to you, or DF you. Or all 3.

You won't get anything out of just talking on the air without a license. Really.

Just get your license if you want to play on the air. You'll learn something from studying and actually getting to use your radio as extensively as you want.

Okay, here's the CB in my new Samurai. It didn't turn on when I tried, I assume it was unplugged while sitting on the lot but it kind of slipped my mind to check until it got dark. Would sorta suck if it's actually broke, seems like a neat thing to have.

Hopefully you can get that cb working.. its pretty decent but if not you csn get em pretty cheap.

Also make sure the antennas plugged in and connections are good before you turn it on!

Yeah.
If you're into dx you certainly want to get sideband. I've been able to make contacts of 2000miles while driving on the highway using sideband, and only 35 watts.

SDR tech is being developed from quirky operating modes on other communications hardware. The RTLSDR uses a cheap DTV dongle, others use very capable FPGAs originally used in cellular towers.

They don't own the radio waves, and neither do you and your buddies. It doesn't "prevent" it but it discourages it. It also is a mechanism to ensure that the majority of operators know at least the basics, and how not to cause harmful interference.

They've been trying, and let's just hope they don't. I know one thing for sure: if the telecom industries somehow got the rights to the ham bands, there would be a *lot* of disruption and interference to their service, 'naamean?

I can agree with you on this for the most part. I was very against licensing at first, for this very reason. I ended up getting the license though because 1: nobody besides CBers and FRS geocachers will talk to you without one, 2: the fines for getting caught on the HAM bands without a license are steep, and 3: it's easy as fuck.

It keeps the bands (for the most part) from turning into 4chan.

My uncle used to have a CB radio in his truck some 15 years ago. Myself and my siblings loved to sneak in his truck and start talking shit to the truckers all the time when I was maybe 8 years old. We even had callsigns. Mine was "Nintendo", my friend down the street was "Grasshopper", and my sister called herself Cardcaptor Sakura.

We did this so often that we were familiar with several truckers (who knew we were just some kids) and they talked to us regularly. Our favorite guy sounded like a baseball announcer who echoed when he talked. He called himself the angel.

Me. I have a CB in my camping van. I was installing a 2 meter/440 radio and since I was already drillin' holes, pullin' coax and power wires, I thought "Why not? Might use it". I have had radios in the vehicle 'bout a year. I talked on the CB once. Primarily to be sure it worked properly.
It is really easy to get a Tech license. Any of you, who have any interest should do it. If you don't know anything about electronics going in, you could pass the test after a weekend of study.

No not really.

IIRC it generally has less response than other bands, but I've only used it 5-10 times with friends in only 2 cities, so limited experience.

There isn't "a lot" of traffic on most 2M frequencies, but it is a higher quality of conversation than you find on CB. If you hang out on one of your local repeater frequencies, you'll get to know the regulars there.
