I remember one day were I had removed my shirt and 1 horse fly would buzz around me. I'd hold my hands up in a certain way and wait. When it landed, I'd wait just a moment, so that it would start to hunker down to bite. Then I'd nab it with one quick motion.
I was able to kill 2 dozen that way, that morning. It was weird though, only 1 or 2 were there at any one time. The instant one died, the next would come in. I never tried to swat them, just catch them then tear their heads off.
I've also noticed that if you squash them, it must send off some chemical scent that will attract others to the area and that just ripping the head off helped prevent this to a certain extent.
Fuck those things.
