From my perspective its to account for the extra work that went into the bottom one. The top one they just had to sharpen their blank and add a handle. The bottom one they shaped the cutting face a bit more too some off the face of the head and made seats where the handle and head join. Also in the camping/backpacker world generally, less weight = more money.

I'll answer since your friend hasn't come back out. Look at the cutting edge. See how the bottom one is more curved? The cross section of the blades is likely very different as well, with the bottom head being thinner behind the cutting edge and the top one becoming thicker to split wood better. Little differences like that can make a huge difference in the way a tool performs in the real world.

As for the head profile - there's not much of a difference really (pic related - similar axes). I guess it's about the blade curvature and the ergonomics that the cutout provides.

The "hunting axe" is named more for the fact that its the axe traditionally carried by hunters/trappers in the colonial areas in North America. It looks thinner and with some room to get your fingers closer as the other anons said, maybe for skinning, but I'm willing to bet it's more useful for fleshing the hides than skinning.
