Get a knife angle guide, takes most of the idiot tax out. Same number of strokes on each side. End grain of some wood can be used to deburr or strop with a leather belt. Get a good diamod stone for innawoods sharpening, cuts almost as good as a water stone, durable, no soaking like an oil or water stone.

The best option for you is the Work Sharp Field Sharpener.

Diamond and ceramic stones, and even a god damn strop, fish hook and scissor sharpener. Well thought out gadget, this is. One made with a lot of input from bladeforums users in fact.

Instead of the pocket smith get the lansky blademedic to take with you in the woods should you get fucked. those pocket sharpeners are just for restoring your blade to a useable edge and not much else.

They are complete crap. They are crap because you only get one angle. You cannot do anything else, and most knives that are worth anything will have their manufactured or designed-for-edge ruined by that contraption. It gives you an edge that does not hold for very long, creates a new angle (bevel? in english) for the knife that is of worse quality.

Unless you own a cheap knife with the exact angle that fits the sharpeners, it will ruin the knife. One must then spend hours returning the knife edge back to its original, designed-for shape. and they break easily.

that works, i've also used sandpaper i manufactured myself out in the field when my own sharpener got destroyed. I carelessly left it out, and it got stepped on. Broke the ceramic and cracked the plastic.

Man just get some Arkansas stones. They work great and cost almost nothing. Practice on those. That way you won't need to bring a sharpening tool with you into the woods. Just find a smooth rock add some water and sharpen away.

If it doesn't say Chosera, Arkansas, or DMT its shit. But seriously too much is made of which stone types and name brand. Sharpening in 95% skill and 5% equipment, you can get a near shaving sharp edge on a cinderblock and a brick (if you don't mind you finish being scratched to hell).

As previously mentioned here, a lot of people just have moras. Though I'm not sure if she means that you should be trying to sharpen the entire side of your knife or what?

Basically Necro, there are several angles that can be used for sharpening your knife. This infographic uses 20 degrees, but that's not absolutely necessary. I use it myself because that's how my knife was sharpened by its maker. Also, you don't want to drag, but push.

To be honest, it's above mine too. I do it with axe bit's on a linishing belt but I've yet to be brave enough to try it with a knife. The method I've read about though is using your choice of abrasive paper over something like a mousemat so as you drag the edge along, the mousemat gives under the paper showing the edge a curved surface(similar to the linishing belt flexing depending on how much pressure you apply) but OFC that's much easier with an axe head because everything is scaled up somewhat.

Pic related, OP. How I do it. If you want the newbie, no skills required version get this:

It'll do serrated edges (work on the back, then just deburr the front). I have one with just coarse diamond and hard Arkansas stones for when someone really fucks a knife up and I want to be able to concentrate on something else while I set an angle. Sharpen at 20 degrees then come back at 25 for a few strokes and you'll have a good general purpose edge. Sharpen at 25 for batoning and 20 for food processing.

The infographic looked like it was suggesting to sharpen your knife as on the left (Assuming a scandi grind; no microbevel) whilst you should sharpen your knife as I drew on the right.

The knife profiles are wonky, but I'm not an artist.

Nevermind the Jap stones if you dont want to shell out for them. They're nice, but for a quick edge any fine stone will do.

also, pull-throughs are garbage. they make any knicks bigger and make the edge all shitty, uneven etc.

Arkansas stones are fine till you try sharpen some of the tougher steels and just start shaving stone off the blocks. If your going to free hand get a coarse/fine india stone (about $23) from norton and a fine/extrafine diamond plate (about $58) from DMT. Buy a block of wood and glue some leather to it ($8-$10).

Spyderco's sharpmaker is shit at reprofiling which the first time you sharpen a knife is something you're going to have to do. The number one thing I see people doing wrong is not spending enough time one the coarser grits to remove the factory grind. Works great for keeping a knife sharp though.

Don't drag the tip off the stone stop before you get to the end so you don't fuck up the point.

Sounds like you've had some poor quality soft Arkansas stones. That said, I prefer something more coarse if I'm fixing something that's really messed up.

Yep. Make the profile the one you want and then shine it with the finer stones. A smooth edge at the wrong angle isn't as sharp as a mediocre edge at the proper angle.

I use a $5 aluminum oxide stone from the hardware store for serious work, soft and hard or black hard (I have both, which I use depends on the knife) Arkansas stones for the final work on the edge. Steels that wear well do take forever to sharpen on an Arkansas stone, but if I was confined to one sharpening instrument it would be a soft Arkansas stone.

And the bit about gluing some wood to some leather to make a strop is excellent advice. Use the green polishing compound from Harbor Freight. It'll shine steel to a genuine mirror finish.
