I wouldn't cut green wood if there's already something dead that will do the job.
However, I don't have any qualms about taking a few green sticks when very few, if any other people are going to be using my spots.
I avoid high use areas like the plague and I generally have permission from the land owners.
I just refuse to feel guilty about a heap of whittling shavings or a tapped Birch tree.
If I was in a public park or in the only patch of public woodland for miles around then you might have a point. But I'm not, so you haven't.
