I coudlnt get a decisive anwser on google so I came here to get some input....

Is it okay to use dish soap to wash leather boots and use olive oil to condition them because they are dry? I know people will say to buy specicility products but this is what I have.

Bought a pair on a milsup.
Vendor told me to use olive oil, like in the army and it worked just fine.
You wash it with water, put some oil on a rag and cover it with oil.
It need two days to completely dry.

It was my pair of shoes for the everyday life for years, but do not use them to go hiking.

Short term? No, it probably won't hurt them, since you're removing, then re-adding oil to the leather. That being said...

Skip both steps and just wipe them with a damp rag (to get dirt and etc. off), then polish with kiwi or something similar. The wax in the polish should be all you need.

Dish soap is pretty harsh. Might be a good idea if you bought a very old pair of boots with cracking layers of polish caked on, but in that case, I'd recommend you hit them with leather conditioner first. I like pecards, myself, since it doubles as a very good dubbing-- water beads right off.

Down the line, the olive oil COULD go rancid in the leather, causing rot. So there's your answer.

Olive oil will rot and stink, get a tin of mink oil paste designed for leather boots (and other leather items, like knife sheaths and such).

IMO you should opt for leather oil, dubbin and polish, in that order. Repeat every month or after every long hike. Pic related is the best choice for dubbin, although I'm not certain how easily available it is in the US. For polish I'd recommend something else than Kiwi, since it's nutritional and waterproofing properties aren't optimal. Steer clear of Kiwi Parade Gloss. Silicone isn't good for leather.

For washing I'd recommend glycerol-based saddle soap, although in most cases water will do.

Also, don't listen to this anon >>349707. Not caring for your footwear will cause them irreparable damage and shorten their lifespan significantly.

Because it wouldn't be 4chan without semantic arguments, right? In this case, the use of the word "nutritional" is figurative language, similar to how leather can be said to be a living material. It refers to how well the product will condition the leather, i.e. how flexible yet strong the leather will be and how long the effect will last.
