Depends what one is doing "innawoods" obviously. I won't take the same things for one day of fishing as for 3 weeks of hiking and camping will I? People act as if just going "innawoods" is an activity in and of itself which it is not, it is just a fucking description of the environment.

I don't entirely understand the appeal of water filters to preppers. Not for long-term survival, at least. I did read a guide to making your own large-scale water filter. You get a large container and you put down a layer of cloth. Then on top of that you have a thick layer of crushed charcoal powder, then another cloth, then sand, then another cloth, then gravel, then another cloth and you repeated layers and stuff and basically it should filter out more or less anything. To be safe, I'd boil the water again after filtering it, but I'm pretty sure this filter gets rid of any nasties. It'd probably be useful to bake the sand/gravel before you put it in as well.
