The wool is treated to keep water out. I have not storm tested mine yet, so I can't speak to its ability to do so first-hand.

Wool is fairly hydrophobic, treated right it's downright waterproof.

If you ever get the chance, touch a sheep's wool even in a heavy downpour the outer layer will be wet but as soon as you part the wool all the inner layers will be dry.

These are heavy as fuck and a cunt to get on and off. They hinder movement too much. Maybe if you're a solid hefty mofo this won't be an issue. Mine is old now so cant recall much about its water resistance when new, but my shoulders get cold and damp in the wet, and it takes some time to dry. Good in the wind and for forcing your way through thorny hedges and scrub.

How old is it? Are you a kiwi?
My preliminary report:
*Heavy but not prohibitively so.
*More annoying to get off and on than most clothes but on the bright side there isn't a full opening in the front for weather to get in.
*T shirt underneath leaves your skin to make contact with wool but you get used to it.
*Full shirt underneath is all right but less comfortable than the tee, since it's more weight and more difficult movement.
*Comfy and loose enough that I don't mind wearing it around the house. I'll usually strip down to an undershirt inside but this isn't bothering me.

It'll get heavier it the rain. The problem getting it on and off is largely because of extra layers worn underneath, which contributes to restricting movement when worn. Extra layers are needed because it's sleeves and skirt are so open the cold gets in. I lived in it when it was new, until I was given a jacket which was a shitload more comfortable without the massive energy expenditure to get the thing off.

Quality front opening coats overcame this years ago.

A Gore-tex pro shell (GTX pro is heavier and more durable than GTX paclite etc) would be my first choice. Really light and can be layered for varying seasonal temperatures.

I've been coveting a Filson Mac' for years. I don't know whether or not to get the double, though. I like that I'd have the option of putting on the extra bit: but I don't think it would be useful here more than two days a year.
