As this anon said, the only good thing about firesteels is that they're reliable. Sure, it's easy to use when you have some nice charcloth, birch bark or whatever, but then you could light it with a lighter just fine.
What you don't seem to understand is that while some people carry complex "fire starting kits", others just carry a lighter. If you have to compare a lighter that even an idiot can use to start a fire with, with a firesteel alone and no cotton balls nor charcloth, then a lighter is going to be miles better.
You must hate yourself if you actually use a firesteel seriously. Even in the remotest areas of Africa and the Middle East, where what you call "survival" is called "monday", I haven't seen anyone use a firesteel, only lighters. And most I've seen use Zippos filled with whatever oil or tar they can find.
