What are the basic /out/ and survival knife skills? What should I be able to do with a blade?

I'm trying to get better at this in a small woodland area near my house.

I did some batoning yesterday.

That's... Pretty much all the (basic) knife skills I can think of. Obviously there are lots of uses for knives, but they're mostly just cutting rope and maybe some material and the rest of carving. Of course there's skinning and butchering as well, but that's not really basic knife skills.

Why not try quartering some sticks and practice making feathersticks? Handy skill if you're trying to make fire with damp wood.

You don't need skills. Just knowledge on the anatomy of animals you may need to kill and eat. Learn how to gut and cut up a deer/squirrels. I've seen alot of hunters Fuck up gutting a deer and ruin half the meat. Definitely somthing to know how to do for outdoor survival. Also, you need to know how to sharpen your knife. That's probly the most important. Fancy skills are pretty useless when your surviving by yourself. Remember the first rule of every weapon, "don't take it out unless your Gunna use it." good luck op.

like all buck, kabar, cold steel, etc have the blade face and then the edge grind only at the bottom.

i have a mora heavy tho, so no problems i suppose.

what is out's opinion on carrying more than 1 knife when hiking? say a medium size belt knife and a big heavy knife in the pack. ex mora companion and bk7

Concave grinds (called hollow grinds) are great for blades that don't see heavy duty use. A chef's knife would be a good example. They are a bit fragile for general camping/innawoods use.

I carry a SAK or stockman or trapper plus a sheath knife when I might need the sheath knife. I carry a pocketknife when I have a pocket in which to put it. Sometimes I'll put another knife in my pack just in case.

Damn near anything. Learn to lead with the back of the knife, not the tip, when doing most of your cuts. This includes cuts where the knife is closer to your body at the beginning than at the end. That's called a draw or pull cut. The piece you're cutting starts contact at the guard and ends at the tip. It's how you should make almost all your cuts, how you strip bark off a branch, how you cut meat and veggies for supper, how you make most of your cuts field processing game.

Relying on push cuts, where you push the knife into what you're cutting, will eventually get your fingers hurt. Some day they'll slip past that guard and remind you it isn't a good idea to make too many push cuts.

That might hurt your "survival" mindset, not everyone is a "survivalist" or a "bushcrafter", and not everyone wants to carry an axe either.

When you realize a knife that's the fourth of the size of a hatchet and the tenth of its weight can do the same thing, no wonder people would rather baton wood, especially when even cheap Chinese steel these days allows to create knives that are harder than the splitting wedges of old.

Technology advances, new techniques are created, and some people are willing to adapt, that doesn't make them fuckwits more than it makes you an old far whose stuck on his perfect vision of what "survival" is and dismisses anything else as pointless and stupid.

Make sure you know how to handle a knife safely and efficiently first.

Make sure you always put it back in it's sheath instead of putting it on the ground.
Then move on to knife skills.

Feathersticking is essential.
Know how to make pegs.
Making a spoon isn't really essential, but good practise.
Batoning shouldn't be your primary means of splitting. But at least learn how to do it safely.
Know how to make at least a couple traps.
Know how to make a contraption to hang a pot over a fire.
Other cooking contraptions would be cool to know how to aswell.
It might also be a good idea to know how to process your meat (skinning, gutting, etc.)
And last but not least: sharpening and general knife care.

Probably alot of other stuff aswell, but you'll learn those as the need rises.

I usually carry 3-4 tools

1 a knife for whittling such as a mora or a small sharp folder

2 a very sharp thin knife for food prep and hunting, its usually a old hickory butcher knife

3 something for heavy use that a good sharp knife shouldn't be subjected to, an axe if its cold, a hatchet if I don't have enough wood to chop to justify the weight of the axe, or sometimes just a medium sized knife that will hold up to some real abuse and batoning if I have little to no wood to split

4 a folding saw is usually with me too

If you pick the rights tools they don't weigh much together but each will do its specific job better than a tool that is trying to be a jack of all trades

A bk7 would make a pretty good knife for the abuse roll for me

Hands down the most important is handling it safely. Cut away from your opposite hand and away from your body if you are using your arm to power the cut. I guess this comes under skills so just going to throw this out here...

How do you guys stop your blades from rusting?
I have a condor bushlore and recently removed the epoxy based coating on the blade with acetone. I forced a patina with some mustard and then for storing in the sheath i gave it a very thin coating of 3 in 1 oil.

I pulled it the other day and it is appearing rusty, any ideas on what I can do stop this for when storing it?

I dread to think what it will be like when I take it camping for the first time.

Forcing a patina once isn't quite enough. After the first round of mustard apply some oil to the blade and even out the patina with some fine steel wool. Wash the blade thoroughly, and do it again, After several cycles of the this the blade should be pretty dark in color, and resist corrosion. You should still oil it, however.

Yeah,.......no. I'd rather carry the extra weight. It is worth the extra weight because of the massive amount of time it saves. And, if you for some stupid reason find yourself in a survival situation, you better hope you brought an axe. Because all the extra time and energy you spend batoning, while you or someone else is injured, could actually mean life or death; when you could have had the job long done before it came to that, had you used an axe.

It's like the different between carrying a Bic lighter and not carrying it because you know how to make fire with a bow drill.

You are being irresponsible if you are relying only on shit like that.

Generally any inorganic oil will work. You don't want anything that will go rancid. Be careful of oils that contain cleaning solvents because sometimes they react unfavorably with materials other than steel.

But then I guess we hit the same identity problem as always: we might be on the same board, we don't all do the same things, even though we like to give those different things the same names. It's like everyone is a hiker/camper/backpacker, even if some go mainly to walk or travel around and see nice places, some go mainly for specific activities like hunting, fishing or climbing, and some go mainly for bushcrafting and survival.

I just walk and travel around and see nice places, and it's not like my survival ever depends on my ability to make a fire, so I don't need an axe, nor do I go /out/ for the sole purpose of hauling shit around.

I can cut wood with a knife just fine, thank you.

On the other hand, there are the anons who make a point of pushing minimalism to an extreme. That whole discussion is tangental to the issue of using a knife to do the work of an axe. Personally, I've been batoning as needed since around 1989. I'm passably good at it, and I'll avoid it like the plague in favor of an axe or field expedient wedges. The potential return on batoning, when weighed against the increased risk of damaging your knife, is unfavorable. The additional weight of an axe or tomahawk head is well worth the functionality it brings.

I was having trouble finding a surface to split logs on in the woods that would allow me to balance them. I found batoning to be a good way to keep the wood stable for splitting. Am I retarded or do you guys find stumps to split on?

It's rare that I have to split stuff for burning anyway. It's mostly just a case of chopping pieces of deadfall to a managable length.
You're not going to find perfectly flat chopping blocks innawoods anywhere so forget about trying to find tree stumps.

Plus, you've either got to camp beside it or haul your fuel from stump to campsite.
Just put a hefty piece down on the ground, make sure it doesn't rock or roll easily and use that.
For added stability, use a piece with a short branch coming off it and hammer the branch into the ground like a peg.

If all you've got to work with is a six inch diameter log then you'd baton off smaller pieces from the edge to make your tinder/kindling before taking off some larger pieces for fuel..

I generally just do it with pieces that are heavy enough to do the trick themselves, say 3 to 4 inches across. I don't flip on smaller stuff and probably should have mentioned that above. It's what I get for posting when I'm preoccupied. Picked that technique up as a kid from an old man.

Not quite what I had in mind. For a middling-sized log, say three to five inches across, lay it down and whack into the side of it like in the videos up here >>357189 or take a smack straight down into it like you're using a splitting maul. Leave the axe in the wood and turn the pieces upside down. Hold the wood away from the axe blade and hold the axe by the end of the handle. The tanning process leaves the leather acidic also the leather will attract moisture in high humidity environments. Other than that it's not an issue. To be on the safe side though an oiled paper wrap or something similar is your best bet.

Condor Bushlore/bushcraft basic

It's basic steel, 1075, easy to sharpen, takes a good edge, holds it okish and it needs attention to avoid it rusting. Compared to expensive knives, fit/finish is shit, edge isn't as good as it could be out of the box, steel is cheap, sheath isn't the best. It comes down to attention to detail, the Condor will serve well but never be as nice to use/behold as say a Bark river.
