i'm planning on camping with my gf in the German Eifel natural park. It's a fucking beautiful area (went on a mountainbiking trip there once). What i want to ask if it is legal to just find a spot to put up a tent and sleep there?

are there rules against it?

I can only speak fom my experiences of wild camping in the UK.
You're only in trouble if you get caught.
It's always better to apologise than ask permission.
The worst that will happen is you'll be asked to move.

i'm not exactly sure how many forest rangers there are and how carefully they are looking. maybe i'll just cover our tent with some branches so it won't be seen quickly when we have lights on. luckily the area has a ton of hills so you can't really see far ahead

It's illegal anywhere but that's just to have a handle on groups of drunk teens littering up the place.
In national parks it is illegal and actually enforced.

That being said, Germany doesn't really have rangers patrolling the place so as long as you lay low a bit, you won't be found.
Go to a fireplace if you want to make a fire, and pack out everything you pack in.

but in my opinon and expirience:
dont litter
leave no trace
out of sight out of mind (hide)
build camp late /leave early
avoid fire
Look likeable (not like a hobo or teen starting a rave)

if cought, say something like sorry it was so late and we though we would not make it to our intended camp. We are just a couple in love and its so romantic. is ok is stay tonight ? if not pack up leave rebuild in a better spott 1 km away. dont lie about "we will leave in 15 mins" and then stay, germans will check if your still there.

I have actually hiked through the northwestern parts of it, we just looked for small huts or barns that we could sleep inside. Get a hiking map if you can, it has stormshelters marked which can be used for sleeping.

Also if you do get "caught" no one cares if you behave, don't leave anything and don't make fires. That is really just allowed in designated spots.

apart from that don't worry too much, the people in that area are pretty chilled. We actually were greeted by a "ranger" one morning after climbing over a whole bunch of barbed wire to sleep in a barn. He just asked us if we were pilgrims, and stayed to chat for a while about where we were headed etc.

Oh, don't sleep on the vogelsang-property (nazi-fortress). We did that and got suprised by a guard with a German shepherd at midnight. After we told her we were just hiking and didn't have any shelter she let us stay there till next morning though.

Can this be a "wild camping in Europe" thread? I'm very interested in which countries you actually DO get in a lot of trouble.

I know in the Netherlands you will pay about 200 EUR per person if you get caught.

Anyone have any other bad experiences?

have camped outdoors in some field in Limburg once. we had no idea who to ask but after a few hours the farmer came. very chill guy, said it was his field but it was fine as long as we didn't litter. not sure about fines

if you are chill, don't make fire/loud noise you're unlikely to get into trouble. but of course preventing being seen is more effective than talking your way out of it.

Maybe it was a dick move on our part to climb in anyways, but it was late October, raining all night and pretty much near freezing point during the night. we didn't bring a tent, and there was no hostel we could have reached that night.
