Looks like I'm gonna be in Southern California for the rest of the summer. Anybody know any good places to go /out/? I've only really been to Big Bear.
I'm also not sure what the rules are on camping in CA. This is pretty much my first time /out/ and I don't want to get in trouble. Do you have to tent up in a campsite, or can you just camp out anywhere? Does it depend on what the park's rules are?

Developed areas of national parks you need to be in an official site. Some more popular areas you need a wilderness permit, but can camp anywhere. Other spots you can just camp anywhere more than 100 feet from a road or water source. I recommend looking up the rules for specific places you're interested in.

Where in Socal?

For hiking theres Mount Baldy (no permits). Mount San Jacinto (self issue permits) and San Gorgonio (permits must be reserved in advanced). Camping (overnight) for San Jacinto and Gorogonio must be applied for ahead of time.

Joshua Tree if you like bouldering / rock climbing, not too sure on permits there. I think theyre pretty easy to get and only needed for over night. There is Kern Area which is known for river activities, no permits (not sure but Ive never used one). There is Mojave desert and Red Rock, which is where I go shooting.

3 hours north of LA, is Mount Whitney, and the surrounding Sierras. But those need permits. Langley and Williamson are easy to get though.

In general National Forests are less restricted than National Parks. State Parks have their own set of rules. Pick a spot that looks good and read up on the rules for it.

Adding to what others have said already, any beach camping will need permits, fires are really restricted, don't go desert camping this time of year.

Deserts a good time, of roasting in 105+ degree weather. Literally the longest days Ive ever felt. But yeah it sucks for sure.

Find the Forestry Service station nearest you. Go in and ask questions of the elderly, sorta-chubby white dude at the desk. He will spend hours telling you about every single spot within a hundred miles.
