Alright /out/, how does one into freshwater lures?

>southeastern VA
>only use worms, sinkers and bobber like a pleb
>catch babby fish but want to step up to the big leagues
I have the starter tackle box wide variety of lures but I can't seem to catch anything.
Plastic? Soft? Bobber? Reel fast or let it sit?

Rapalla is the fake fish with treble hooks right? Do I just cast it as far as I can then slowly reel it like mimicing real fish?

depends on the state of weeds in the waters. i live on a 400 acre cypress pond and mostly fish with 10 inch culprit worms, hook embedded. same for zoom trick worms.

I usually add a heavy weight lead sinker to increase casting distance and drop since i usually fish 14 lb line. i gave up on lesser weight lines probably 15 years or so ago. i want to crank a fish right out of the water, not pussy foot around for 5 minutes hoping my line doesn't break.

now if the water is clear you can try your luck with rebels, broke back rebels, rattle traps, all that stuff rapala makes like above poster said, etc.

now back when i was a little more serious about fishing in open top waters with weeds below the surface, i'd break out the zara spook. this thing often got me in more trouble than catching fish, what with it's size and giant treble hooks flopping around, but in shallow areas it may work well for you. casts easy and very far without any extra lead.

all BS aside, i've caught more fish on a generic spinner/beetle spin than anything else. countless bream, bluegill, bass, catfish, jack, warmouth, even eels and dogfish.

the bigger the spoon, the better. you can use a real bass sized hook and - my favorite - a big ass twirl tail white grub, hook hidden in the body. though the typical hook/head combo that comes with these are generally fine, i've bent a few to the point where they wouldn't hold a fish.

now if you want to catch catfish specifically, there's no substitute for meat. go to the store and buy the cheapest cut of the most gristly meat you can get. set up a trot line or put some 25 lb test on your ugly stick and a heavy weight reel, and post it up hardcore at a reasonable angle so it won't be under a lot of bending force.

you can use a milk jug for a bobber if your'e ghetto and trot linin' but on a rod i'd buy the biggest bobbers you can find. i used to have some the size of a tangerine just for this. fish medium to deep depth. use a treble hook or better yet, two treble hooks since this isn't some pussy ass catch and release BS. the more hooking surface the better.

get that cut of meat all tangled up on those treble hooks and let it sit overnight.

similar method for turtles but fish with the meat/hooks literally just under the bobber, inch or two under water at most. turtles are pretty low on the IQ scale since they think they're fucking invincible with their shells and shit. personally i don't and won't eat turtles so hunting them is for the kill, not food.

I picked up some rapalla & spinners & am about to go /out/. Hopefully with pull something out of the water thats bigger than my hand.

Speaking of turtles when bobber-fishing do ya'll just move to a new spot, or any tips/tricks to avoid them harassing your line. They are quite a nuisance and I've lost quite a few lines to them being bastards, but the biggest fish I've caught freshwater was as a result of quickly reeling as a big snapping turtle chased my bait.
