Looks like a decent hybrid bike to me. I have a similar, probably less expensive trek 7.2 for {2009} which I use for everyday commuting and weekend trips out of the city. Bikes rule, cars drool!

Mines a 1.7 fuji. I think it was $650. I got it for my 21st bday a couple weeks ago so I havent gotten a chance to take her /out/ yet, partially because I dont want to pop a wheel. But shes been great as far as commuting is concerned. Only issue is that atlanta is NOT a bike friendly city. Drivers are douchebags here.

I was thinking about getting cyclocross tires, but I fear theyre too small to ride on rough terrain

Just get the widest 'cross tires that fit. You don't need MTB tires to go offroad especially on easier trails (but they do help in soft/muddy ground and on rough stuff). I rode my road bike with 28s on dirt trails until i got my Cross-Check.

It'll be a nice bike once you get some mud on it.

The size is really a problem, but Giant bikes (as in the ones with GIANT written on the side) are unfortunately surprisingly popular among commuters. Mostly seem to be guys and I think they don't want to get the little folding bikes made specifically for commuters.

I've been forced to stand at an awkward angle in the door-well on a 30 minute train (Fortunately the shorter of my two trains to uni) because of some cunt with a massive bike.

If those nations you are going to will be able to service a Rohloff hub, I'd say it looks good. I'd lean towards a traditional gear system though since they are easier to work on.

I've got a 90 USD budget and I'm looking for a bike that will handle my fat ass around the city and a little offroad for shortcuts.

5'11"
220 lbs. (I weigh a little less but let's be safe)

I have bad knees and a bad back, so I'm trying to take that into consideration with frames and so on.

Any recommendations? I don't intend to do very hard riding, just need something to get me to work and back.
