I've got a machete. I've thrashed at some long grass at the bottom of the garden and chopped down a tree that was about wrist thickness. It took about 50 swings of the machete where it would've taken about 5 with a hatchet.
Other than that, the machete gets used as a draw knife because I'm too cheap to buy a proper one while that thing does an adequate job.
If a machete is the right tool for the area you're going to then take one. If a hatchet would be better suited then take one. If you think you might need both then take both.
