Hey /out/, can we have a filter thread?

Going hiking & camping for three weeks with five buddies and we need some sweet, sweet hydration.

Leaning heavily towards a platypus gravityworks system but the review sites seem to say everything is fantastic, what are /out/'s experiences? Are there any advantages to pumped systems rather than straw/gravity based systems? Do you take spare filters?

also, in advance, fuck tablets. They taste gross.

Used this during an overnight huck in northcountry. I mostly boiled, then filtered. Saw a group with one of those hand pump filters with a tube down to the source. Got jealous. Hard to realize how important it is to get water quick so you're not stuck at camp trying to boil water to get going. So yes, lifestraw was worth it for like $20.

My brother has a platypus bag without the dirty water bag and filter. He just fills it up before he leaves the house.

I would actually never use those straws or that platypus filter to drink water that might be contaminated.

It might work fine if you find an untouched water source, but I wouldn't trust it with any water source near a road

pump systems are fucking wank. they are the most tedious and they break if you're not gentle with them. gravity systems and the Sawyer squeeze systems are far more practical and usually lighter so I recommend those with a chemical treatment as a back up.

life straws are the only type I haven't used but they look fairly practical at least.

sure you can, I like the the filter though because it means that i only have to carry half the water i otherwise would when i'm hiking as if I run out i can just fill it up again rather than sit around boiling stuff for 10 mins.

pretty much any pump system can be used as a gravity system too. i use a first need but im pretty sure they can all just be hooked up to a higher pouch of dirty water and it will gravity feed through the filter.

Gravity filters are absolutely awesome in groups. They are really easy to back flow to clean, and less physical effort than pumps. I have the Platypus one in the pic and I really love it in a lot of situations. The zip top on the dirty reservoir is REALLY challenging to seal though, I haven't been able to seal mine since I first bought it and neither has my friend who has it.

However, pumps are more versatile - I also have the MSR HyperFlow pump filter and you can get water from such a tiny puddle, whereas with a gravity filter if you don't have a good source it is really tough to fill the dirty water reservoir. Additionally, if you are above tree line or in a meadow and there is nothing on which to hang the filter it really sucks to stand there and hold it!

I've got the 4L version, It works great but, I did have a problem with the clean bag just having an opening for the water so I had no control of how much came out and how fast. so I just went out and got one of the water bottle pour cap things.
also, and im sure this is the most Obvious advice I can give about it but. when you are filtering from dirty bag to clean bag, leave the top of the dirty bag open and it will filter 10x faster.

You can but depending on the source it still might not be palatable. Last time I went out and only used the boil method I still had some pretty gritty water.

Why filter? Switch to chemical purification. 5 drops per liter for iodine, 3 drops per liter for bleach. Either works great, weighs nothing next to a pump.
If you want to strain particulates and floaties out use a bandana across the lip of your bladder or water bottle.
The average wait time from treatment to potability is 15 mins. As the water gets colder this can go up. Two solutions, wait it out (ie fill and keep hiking, fill bottles and treat as you find water) OR you can increase the dose of chemical.
