I just came back from a trip where I tried to whittle a spoon with a folder. Even for a task like that, a bigger fixed blade lets you take off more material in one stroke, and is accurate enough for fine work.
You can have both durable and light with a Mora. The Companion is made with batoning in mind, but light due to no full tang and plastic handle.
When in doubt, carrying 5 more ounces is preferable to a knife breaking on you if you take it to the limit of what a knife is supposed to be used for.
