Im going home on leave and I always wanted to go urban exploring once I found out about it. Then I found this website and surprise surprise I actually used to live in Detroit (well just outside of detroit anyways). Pic related but theres a good number of these places I wanted to go check out and shoot some video/pictures as well.

Also, if you encounter some, make yourself look big, make monkey noises, and jump up and down. This will intimidate them and scare them off.
If you're traveling in an area with a lot of them, make sure that you're making a lot of noise while you walk. Try whistling or wearing bells.

I also live near Detroit. There are a lot of abandoned schools, churches, and even theatres to explore. Going during the day and with someone is your best bet because there are squatters. Also beware of asbestos.. Most abandoned buildings will have it.

In February (yes during that polar vortex bullshit), I explored the old Packard Plant and met a white guy (I'd say in his 60s) who asked me if I needed help. He said he had been living in the abandoned buildings for years and gave me his business card. He was nice and his name is Allan Hill.

I haven't run into any other squatters since, but you'll most likely find other explorers. Just don't act rude or scared if you do see squatters, just leave.
Detroit is getting better do to hipsters and college students, so you'll have to go around the outskirts to see cool shit. Check out the Heidlberg Project, too if you're into weird art stuff.

Ok, in Saturday I'm going to explore local factory abandoned 20 years ago. Already went there on a bike today to see the outside and snoop a little.
Already found: one building inhabited by a bum, working vaporizer, a stream running in a sewer few meters below surface and 9mm casing (guns are illegal in my country). Also seen teenagers groping and a hare.

Came with the list of equipment so far:
>Cellphone
To call help in case and each other (since we don't have 2 way radios)
>Backpack
>First Aid Kit
>Headlamp
>Flashlight
>Respirator
Because there are asbestos filled heat pipe tunnels I would like to see
>Gloves
I was thinking of getting heavy duty rubber working gloves
>Camera (with optional):

> - Tripod
> - Dust cleaner
>Water Bottle
Also to clean myself
>Multitool or Pocket knife
>Manhole Hook
I'll try to buy 30 cm one tomorrow. It is two handed and long enough to do the job like 45cm long ones and still can be used as a weapon. So I was thinking instead of getting 15cm one to always carry with you, and long one to take only whenever you expect to use it, just carry 30cm instead.

I like the list personally. This might sound dumb but if theres stray dogs I would bring a small bag of dog treats and throw them at or near them assuming they seem hostile. Its better than nothing I suppose and not sure what else you could do.

I would replace rubber boots with something more like leather unless if theyre heavy duty rubber boots.
Also for the respirator make sure its a P3 (i think its called its a something 3). Any lower type will not filter out asbestos and some of these places are gonna smell like shit so a respirator in general will be great.

I can't afford one this week, so getting near asbestos is out of the question yet, but the place is huge (5 story building with yard inside, some other small buildings and basements in the area, stream sewer and basements) so I'll be coming back for sure

I would definitely buy respirators next time I feel like exploring those abandoned buildings. They were TONS of asbestos everywhere (piles 2m high in some places). Fuck this.

I used to be part of a UE organization, nothing incredibly dangerous ever happened. A friend fell through the floor of a warehouse(his backpack caught him and he sort of poohbear'd), had to slide down a 25 foot embankment to dodge a train. and my dumb ass jumped off a roller coaster track that was about 12 feet off the ground. Be mindful of state laws, watch for air quality in some of the places you go, wear think heeled shoes.

As someone who is from the Detroit area (Bloomfield Hills) I would say as long as the building doesn't have burn marks (almost everything in Detroit has been on fire at some point) it should be safe to enter.

However you'll have to worry about them being vagrant homes or gang hideouts.

There are niggers hiding everywhere.

So fire damage and niggers are the only danger to your health out there, a fire damaged building could collapse at any moment and a nigger could try to rape you at the drop of a hat.

You've never been to Detroit have you? The response time of police in Detroit is 4-24 hours, if they respond at all.

This is fact, the city is a literal wasteland. It is eerie as fuck and I live right by it.

I haven't gotten a lot of good pics recently, haven't gone out much. I have however returning to this industrial park soon and an abandoned highway tunnel in the fall. Had a plan to stop by Concrete City in northern PA two weeks ago but ended up being really tired and just continued the drive home.

I live in a small town in the NW os the USA and unfortunately we dont have much around here as far as urban exploring goes.

what we do have though are a bunch of WW1-WW2 era coastal defense bunkers, the main one near roads and all that are mostly blocked off but there are a few farther innawoods that are explorable and have interconnecting tunnels.

another is that we have have an old underground downtown. Back in the 1800s when the town was being built they built directly on top of a large beach and whenever it got stormy or had very high tides the town risked flooding so to fix this they leveled most of the buildings, filled them in, and built on top of all of it. But there are still sections of the old town underground more or less intact, with store fronts and windows still there. The city does guided tours of one of the sections but I would love to find a way into some of the others. (In case anyone is wondering yes these areas are structurally sound, we have have never had in collapses in the old areas).
