You play by the normal rules and turn-order. But instead of setting up the correct arrangement of wickets, you simply put them anywhere you want, then play "over-sized mini-golf with hammers" in the outdoors. It's great at picnics. Add in Mimosas (which make it ok to drink in the morning), and it's the best thing that there is to do, outside.
Pick-related. My old, super-good croquet set was finally dead. The heads of the mallets split, eventually, because you're playing on uneven ground and hit harder than you'd need to in a real match. So we bought the Coleman set for $70 (relatively cheap). The colors aren't right, but that doesn't really matter. And it's been holding up like a boss, so far.
