ITT we talk about Folding Saws. I'am not sure which one I should buy...?

The benefits are obvious:

i use this little cheap saw i got at lidl for the ewuivelent of a little over $3 and its been holding up good

i also had a fiskars retractable saw that i cant seem to find on the website anymore so i guess its been fazed out. it was the one where when it was retracted a carabiner poped out of the bottom. anyway. i would not recomend the retracting/sliding saw in any way shape or form. the mechanism by design is just plain bad. dont get me wrong it would cut good and it never loosened itself and slit in while sawing. quite the oposite i would frequently need other tools the get it to go back in. and it never really felt that sturdy

so for now im using the cheapo saw until it breaks

I've got one of these too, it's more than up to the job as long as you are not being silly and trying to cut down a tree with the thing, I've used mine to harvest a sapling for a bow stave and it was an easy job.

stealth in the context of concealment wouldn't necessarily be an issue because you can't conceal a blade over 4 inches in most states, but i see what you're talking about

I've used quite a few brands over the years for work purposes (sometimes bringing in a chainsaw or bow saw just isn't feasible). In general my experience has been pretty good and it doesn't seem like any one brand is head-and-shoulders above the rest.

If you get a longer blade (10-12" range) you'll be able to get through just about anything with patience and sweat. There's something supremely satisfying about dropping a big half-fallen aspen with just a folding saw.

Ultimate bush remover but not a real saw.
You won't use it more than 10 minutes without pain in your arm.
And it is heavier than a regular saw.

If you have to take a machete, then take one with a saw on it. Otherwise buy a 20$ folding saw.

Everyone use a Bahco or a Fiskars. This is why I ordered a G-Man camper.

I decided against the Husqvarna because of Price and its technology.

The G-Man has a Straight blade with 3 cutting edges with added distance between the teeth that improves the removal of sawdust from the kerf.

Agreed on all benefits. I use a rather cheap folding pruning saw with a 24cm ( 9 1/2 inch) blade. The blade is japanese style and its teeth are razor sharp. Cuts green wood like nothing, I primarily use it to fell small trees / saplings for bow satves. 24cm are totally sufficient for that, I wouldn't buy below that lenght though. Cost me only about 20 bucks and I love it.

However, threre's a certain con I'ed like to point out:

> be prepared to buy spare blades

However, If you are familar with japanese style saws handling this is mostly a non issue. Just take your time sawing and don't rush it.

Dunno about other folding saws, but I'ed imagine the ones marketed as outdoor equipment (baco laplander?) might have sturdier baldes. This might cost some efficiency in sawing though...

+1 on the bahco. I have the MEEC version that's orange. basically the same saw. I threw it in my backpack but it's damn useful when you're way out. I also have the Sven saw. Sven is maybe 25% faster to cut with but not nearly so compact. I use the sven in the base camp but the bahco in excursion camping.

bahco was also $18 and the blade is coated. I carry it in my fishing backpack which gets wet regularly. For comparison the saw is not rusted at all. My moral light my fire stainless steel knife has started to rust though.

yeah, never used it for anything other than sawing. Would never use it as a hanging grill or something other. But as a saw it is awesome also because dismantled, everything fits in a tube.

Just like to say, thanks /out/. You recommended this to me last time.
I needed to cut out a tree root, which would have taken me 15 mins with a blunt axe. It got the job done in under 10 seconds with the bahco. It cuts through wood and roots like a knife through butter.

I've had a Fisker sliding saw and it worked OK. It cut but was slow. Then I got a Silky SuperAccel and it cuts amazingly quick. My friend gave me a corona folding saw and it cuts quickly also but is about 66% larger than my Silky and cuts an 6 inch log only 6 seconds faster. The fisker took about 90 seconds longer.

Not that silky don't make good saws - used a couple in work for a whole winters worth of hedge laying.

like most I have a cheap fiskars folding saw. it works when inawood on anything around 3 or 4 in or smaller. I only bring it backpacking on two or three day max trips max, otherwise its all about muh grams.
