Don't know if /out/ or /k/ is the right place to ask. So:
I bought a car today and this knife was in the trunk. Is it a good knife or some chepo crap ?

Gerber; A pretty good brand. Have a couple myself. Good find if you ask me. Beware of the carbon blade though, it rusts quite easily.

Makes half of the blade a bit pointless unless you spend all day cutting ropes.

I would rather a full blade, not 2.5 inches of knife and a tiny saw.

You can do a lot better than gerber but you can also do significantly worse.
It's a Gerber prodigy. I have the tanto model. I made the mistake of getting the serrated version, like you have there, but I payed a pittance so I don't care too much.

Serrations are only good for cutting certain things (rope, cloth, twigs, etc), are harder to sharpen, and are next to the hilt where you do most of your cutting.

Like >>360317 said, having it right next to the hilt to make a half blade instead of having a full blade AND a serrated portion has disadvantages for essentially no good reason.

See the blue one? Work the back side, then just deburr the front. Serrations aren't hard to sharpen. I don't like them on my knives, but they aren't anything special as far as sharpening goes.

Serratus is the Latin base for the word serrated. It means "made (or make) like a saw." I don't want a saw, I want a knife. The cutting action is different.

Look at the serrations again: they're convex, and hard as fuck to sharpen. Concave ones are indeed easy to sharpen in comparison.

Also serrations have little in common with a saw, aside from the looks, they're designed to do very different things.

Assuming you mean it s trivially easy to cut, then I agree. I've never had a problem cutting through paracord or even through hammock webbing with a regular non-serrated blade.

they sharpen from the back side just like most every other serrated pocket knife. if you don't go full retard and use a fuckton of force, it won't burr up on you. the only reason you would touch the front is to raise the bevel after years of use and subsequent sharpening have dramatically thickened the bevel. forming the rounded teeth is no big deal with even something like the a Sharpmaker® stone held in your hand.

the rounded teeth get hung up less in cutting which, mean less force and so subsequently less impact damage on the edges.

tl;dr
you have to remove less metal when you sharpen.

no, you sharpen it from the back side because, that's how you fucking sharpen serrations....

the only thing you would do to the front is deburring or resetting the bevel higher up the blade. if you don't use excessive pressure, you don't need to deburr....

The way most people do it is to sharpen them from the front to create a burr on the other side, and then straighten or remove the burr from behind. You can't do that easily with convex serrations, because there are those very small grooves in between that you can't sharpen unless you use a very, very small rod.

If you only sharpen the backside, you end up grinding off the serrations, and making it into a straight edge blade over time. It works, it's easy and fast to do, but it's far, far from ideal.

Who cares, it's a free knife, use it as your beater for all those shitty jobs that would dull and scratch your main blade. oil it up and put it back in the sheath until you need it, drop it in your "get home bag" in the trunk of your car.

Serrations inhibit your ability to make longer, strong cuts.
