Hey /out/, are hammocks viable in cold weather? I've seen them recommended for SHTF innawoods situation, but won't you just freeze your ass off?

Also, never used hammock outside of the regular garden one, with wooden beams, so tell me if there's anything else I need to keep in mind.

They can be, but at this point you might as well be carrying a tent (from a weight perspective, mostly).

To survive in a hammock in cold weather you'll need good insulation beneath you (Underquilt), good insulation above you (Sleeping bag or overquilt) and a tarp which needs to be kept down quite low to your hammock (It should be about the same height as where your hammock's ropes meet the tree, IMO).

Overall you're looking at a very similar weight to a tent.

I would like to know why everyone says hammocks are comfy. Ultralight backpack hammocks are one of the most uncomfortable experience of my life; hell, id rather carry a traditional hammock with wooden poles out.

My problem is I sink down into the friggin thing and the hammock is so wide, the walls come up and envelop me like a green bean. It's the ENO 1 person and I'll be damned if I didn't wake up with the sorest shoulders of my life from being slowly entangled to death by the poorly thought out construction of the thing.

Sleeping is much better diagonally. Lay your feet about 45° to the left or right of the tree ot post, and your head the same to the other direction.

Sleeping like this means your shoulders won't be pushed together, and you won't feel like you're in the Hulk's fist.

I'm a side-sleeper so I don't really get that problem. I found that having my hammock too slack ended up causing ridges running from end-to-end which really ruined the experience. I think I tie my hammock tauter than most, but I'm not completely sure, and I don't get that problem.

Honestly, I adore hammocks, but cannot, for the life of me fall asleep in one. Spent a month on a glacier with just a 0 degree sythetic bag and a thermarest neoair lite, was fine.

If you're in a hammock because you want to be, that's fine. If not, theres plenty of insulated materials around.

Hammocks are comfortable, I found, but yes they are extremely cold. They make the bottom half of a sleeping bag completely useless.

I have not tried using my hammock in weather that gets below 60 at night, but when I do take it I usually only take it and a sleeping bag and it is extremely cold. .

I lived in a Hammock Up in a tree about 50 feet up for about 8 months in Oregon. Just had a form mat inside my sleeping bag. Got through the entire winter just fine.

Erm no. Air conducts heat away faster than the ground. This is the reason bridges freeze over long before the rest of the roadway freezes over. The ground is a better insulator than having just air below you.

Laying down on cold ground is really cold at first but that layer of earth warms up plus you don't have air flowing between you and the ground.

Sleeping in a hammock without the right gear is some cold ass shit.

It actually varies wildly, depending on wind.

Sleeping on 16°C/61°F ground is enough to put you at risk of hypothermia, even with a sleeping bag. At this temperature, in a hammock without the slightest wind and no rain, you only need a fleece cover.

You can't really compare tents and hammocks easily, unless you consider independently air temperature, ground temperature, wind speed and air moisture. Between warm to cold temperatures, what is better between a tent and a hammock alternates depending on all those conditions.

To give you an idea, I camped in the Sahara desert in a hammock, with only said fleece cover. Air temp went down as low as -20°C, there was no wind nor rain, and air moisture close to 10%. I slept like a baby.

As long as you have a good sleep system you should be ok. Hammocks replace the need for a sleeping pad or bedroll so they save space, but you'll always need trees or something sturdy to fasten them to. The prevention of heat loss should be noted also, as laying on the ground during freezing temps promotes cold conduction without proper barriers between you/your sleep system and the earth.

That being said make sure you have a tarp or poncho in case it gets windy, rainy, or both.

Something use for bottom warmth in both a hammock and on the ground:
A space blanket. The cheap $3 ones. It's purpose is to reflect heat back onto you and does exactly that. Adds easily 5-10 if warmth. Be warned, it's noisy as fuck to lay out

Contrary to common belief, the Sahara desert consists mostly of vast rocky areas with well enough elevation to tie a hammock. Those sandy dunes you see in movies are actually a minority of it.

There are also oasis and oued, with well enough trees to tie a hammock. Those are not everywhere, but then you usually follow them for they're your only landmarks, plus they're your only source of water.

And to put an end to even more myths, there's rain in the Sahara desert, and there's even snow in winter.

EIther there were interesting enough features to attach it as if it was a tree, we had 12 meter pieces of dyneema specifically for this which we used instead of tree straps, or we used climbing nuts in cracks, two on each side just in case, though we never had any problem with it.

I just got a Snugpak hammock. My friend had his and a sleeping bag rated to 0 degrees Celsius, and he was fine on a very very cold night. Ice on the grass in the morning.

It's something of a double edged sword. It provides much greater protection from the elements without much additional weight, but it requires two additional tie outs compared to a standard diamond tarp. I find that the additional weight and setup time are outweighed by the exceptional coverage it provides. It's a WBBB mamajamba in silnylon if you're interested.

I use an eno hammock with an inflatable rei mat and a 30 F sleeping bag and it suited me fine for 45 F very warm. You mainly just need something that wont let wind blow through underneath you. If you use a blanket or sleeping bag alone the wind will cut through the compressed material and go straight to your bum and it sucks. I use a mat under me even in 70F weather cause CBS sucks (cold butt syndrome)

Last hike i went on brought a tent and hammock just to try them out and i regretted bringing the tent the whole time. Not as comfortable IMO, heavier, longer set up and take down.

Not that guy but I slept about 25 feet up in a tree in Santa Rosa for a few nights when I was passing through. Its easier in a tree that splits so you can run it parallel to another branch but about one foot over and two o three feet above so you can walk along the branch and sit in the hammock. Basically its all about finding a compatible tree. Personally I was in a Magnolia tree (the one on 7th street next to the museum).
