I also recommend getting a screen for your pan to screen out big rocks. I use a 1/4".
a five gallon bucket is nice too. You can fill it full of screened dirt to carry down to the river, and you can toss your concentrates in it if you don't feel like sniftering your gold with each pan load.
other than that land ownership is usually the bigger problem than finding gold. Know where you can and can't pan beforehand. Look at maps, talk to landowners, talk to government agencies.
